    • A data storage system has a circuit board module, a set of Serial ATA devices, and a set of Serial ATA cables connecting the circuit board module to the set of Serial ATA devices. The circuit board module includes a circuit board, multiple host circuits mounted to the circuit board and multiplexer circuitry mounted to the circuit board. Each host circuit is configured to perform data storage operations on the behalf of an external client. The multiplexer circuitry is configured to (i) receive control signals from the host circuits and (ii) provide communications pathways between the host circuits and the set of Serial ATA devices in response to the control signals. Such an embodiment alleviates the need for multiple versions of disk drive assemblies and their associated costs.

    • A group of network devices, such as Ethernet switches, are logically configured as a single cluster, with one commander device and one or more member devices. Each network device capable of belonging to a cluster transmits data packets containing cluster capability information to its neighbors. Each network device capable of belonging to a cluster that receives data packets containing cluster capability information maintains a database containing information about its cluster-capable neighbor devices. The commander device of a cluster is the point-of-contact through which the cluster is managed. The commander device maintains a database of neighbors of the entire cluster. Upon user request, the commander device displays a list of cluster neighbors and notes which ones may be added to the cluster. When the user adds a device to the cluster, that device immediately sends its database of discovered neighbors to the commander device. The commander device adds those neighbors to its database and displays them at the user's next request. Thus, a user is informed of which switches are available to be added to a cluster at any given time.

    • A content delivery network has a content switch that intercepts content requests transmitted toward the origin server. The content switch distinguishes the content request as originating either external to the content delivery network or from within the content delivery network. The content switch forwards external requests to a content router, within the content delivery network and forwards internal requests to the origin server. Devices external to the content delivery network do not access the content carried by the origin server directly and, therefore, the content delivery network does not require the origin server alter its content when storing the content on a content server within the content delivery network. Use of the content switch, therefore, minimizes or eliminates the time, effort, and expense of rewriting content cached from the origin server to the content server within the content delivery network.

    • A data communications device has a controller which includes means for intercepting a request signal transmitted from a source to a host computer having a host destination address. The request signal includes the host destination address. The request signal is originally destined for receipt by a host computer that would respond with control information for controlling a manner in which the source transfers a data stream. The controller further includes means for originating a control signal in response to receiving the request signal. The control signal includes the control information for controlling the manner in which the source transfers the data stream. The controller further includes means for providing the control signal to the source to individually control the manner in which the source transfers the data stream among multiple data streams transferred by the source. The source is a routing mechanism operating within the data communications device.
