摘要： A first plastic strip has longitudinally spaced studs each of which can be bent over at a 90.degree. angle. A second strip has holes through which the studs fit and grooves which receive and secure the bent over studs. Paper punched to receive the studs is clamped between the two strips. The studs are then bent over into grooves in the second strip and held in bent position. The grooves have overhanging lips which detachably retain the studs in place. The paper in thus securely bound. To prevent cracking the studs, the abruptness of the 90.degree. bend may be relieved by forming an annular depression around the base of each stud.

No. 3,596,929 comprise sheets formed with spaced apertures along one margin bound by a first thermo-plastic strip having studs fitting through the apertures and a second strip formed with holes, preferably counterbored through which the studs extend. The studs are cut to proper length and headed to fill the counterbores. A debinding tool has a blade which fits under the second strip, between the topmost sheet and the strip and shears off the studs or pops off the heads. The tool may be used to fulfill the debinding function in several ways.

摘要： An uncased book is provided with end leaves preferably having pressure sensitive adhesive initially protected with release paper which is fabricated in various alternate ways to facilitate stripping off the release paper. The case for the book has a strip of pressure sensitive coated material at the spine area. Apparatus used to case the book has a table on which the case is positioned inside up and means for centering the case relative to the table. The uncased book is placed in a clamp pivoted to the table, the clamp being adjustable for thickness of the book. The method consists in pivoting the clamp to bring the spine edge of the uncased book into contact with the pressure sensitive spine area of the case and then to strip away the release paper for the end leaves so that the latter adheres to the insides of the top and bottom covers of the case.

摘要： For convenient packaging of plastic bookbinding strips, cassettes are provided. The end edges of each strip are received in channels formed in opposed side rails. The rails engage adjacent either end the depending legs of transverse spacer bars. The spacer bars have plural sockets to engage projections on the upper ends of the legs so that the spacing between side rails may be varied to accommodate strips of different lengths--e.g., 81/2 inches, 11 inches, etc. Different length legs may be used to accommodate different length studs formed on the strips. By eliminating the legs entirely, flat female binding strips may be packaged in the cassette. A detent is provided in the ends of the rails preventing removal of strips until the detent is bent out of position. The cassette is especially useful in equipment which mechanically assembles punched sheets and strips preparatory to binding a book in a binding machine.

摘要： An improvement on commercial machines which bind documents using plastic strips. The punch mechanism may be automatically actuated when the paper sheets are properly aligned on a punch platen or actuated manually at the user's discretion. Distance of the holes from the edges of the sheets may be indexed. The binding mechanism improvements include interchangeability of height of the pressure bar and speed of binding mechanism, depending on thickness of book to be bound or as selected by user, means for automatically starting the motor drive of the binding mechanism and pressure bar when it has been manually placed or moved onto the document to be bound, automatic lifting of the pressure bar when the binding cycle has been completed, a resistance-heated knife construction which reaches operating temperature more rapidly, controls and minimizes the heated knife temperature fluctuations, maintains a more uniform temperature profile of the knife, improvements in the mounting of the timing cams of the machine and improved means for securing and positioning the cooling and forming fingers in place. In a modification, means is provided for binding a "wrap-around" cover which extends rearward of the spine of the book and then is folded forward around the binding strips for the book. The means comprises a removable backstop for the spine edges of the sheets to be bound, a platen and roller to support the lowermost of the wrap-around covers and a rack to support the uppermost of the wrap-around covers during the binding procedure. The knife structure is modified to avoid interference with the modified means.

摘要： To cut and form heads on a plastic stud or rod, particularly in binding papers together, a rotating tool of special construction is forced against a conical concave cam surface. The tool has a hollow shank with at least one flexible arm extending therefrom, said arm formed with a head, the arm being normally outwardly slanted so that the head is spaced outward of the axis of rotation. Each head has an inward projecting blade at its distal end. The space between the axis and the inner edge of the blade in normal position is sufficient to permit longitudinal movement of the stud inward of the head. The exterior of the distal end of the head is conical, convex and complementary to the cam. As the tool head is brought toward the cam, the head is forced inward causing the blade to sever the stud. Simultaneously the distal end of the head as it spins splays the severed end of the stud, forming a rivet head, which holds the papers in place. In a preferred embodiment there are two cooperating heads on the tool.

摘要： An end sheet, which may be reinforced with fabric, paper or other material, is bound along with the pages of the book and the corresponding end sheet for the opposite end of the book by means of plastic strip retainers as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,730,560. The end sheet is secured to the inside of the cover of the case by adhesive. In preferred forms of the invention, at least one portion of the end sheet extends from under the spine edge of the plastic strip and folds outside the outer surface of the strip. In this form, the cover lies flat when opened. In other preferred forms, the end sheet extends from under the plastic strip in both directions.

摘要： A machine is provided for first punching holes in sheets and then binding the sheets to form a book. Used with the machine are two thermo-plastic strips, a first having longitudinally spaced, upstanding studs and the second having holes corresponding in spacing to the studs and preferable formed with counterbores on one surface. The machine has a punch to punch the sheets. Punched sheets are placed on a platen on top of the second strip and the studs of the first strip are inserted through the holes in the paper and the holes in the second strip. A pressure foot is mechanically moved to apply pressure on the first strip to compress the paper between the two strips with predetermined force and this pressure is maintained until completion of the binding. Excess stud length protruding below the second strip is cut off a short distance below the second strip by heated knives. The knives are then moved upward, deforming the stud stubs into the counterbores in the second strip to form heads. Upon withdrawal of the knives, cooling and forming fingers are forced against the heads to shape and cool same. When the heads have hardened, the fingers are withdrawn and the pressure foot withdrawn.
