    • A press section in a paper machine includes, in the direction of web run, two successive, separate press nips for dewatering a web, the web passing between the nips in a closed draw. The first nip is formed between two, preferably hollow-faced, press rolls. The press section includes a first fabric which picks up the web from the forming wire. The press section comprises at least three fabrics of which one acts as a press fabric in the first press nip and another acts as a press fabric and/or as a transfer fabric both in the first as well as in the second nip. The web is transferred from the last press nip of the press section to the drying section. The last press nip is formed by an extended-nip press and has a nip zone with a length substantially longer than the length of the press zone of the preceding roll nip. The web runs through the nip zone of the extended-nip press so that it is supported on one side by a substantially non-water receiving transfer fabric, the other side of the web being pressed by a water-receiving press fabric. The web is substantially immediately detached from the water-receiving press fabric after passing through the extended nip zone and is passed to the drying section.

The third separate press nip comprises an extended-nip press, the length of the nip zone thereof being substantially larger than the lengths of the zones of the preceding roll nips. The web runs through the nip zone of the extended-nip press supported on its bottom side by the substantially non-water receiving transfer fabric, the upper water-receiving fabric being pressed against the other side of the web.

    • Method in a variable-crown roll in which hydraulic loading elements or a series of hydraulic loading elements are used. Such series of elements acts along a plane of a nip that can be formed between the variable-crown roll and a counter-roll thereof, with such elements or series being situated between a central axle of the roll and a cylindrical mantle which is rotatable about the central axle through radial bearings. The central axle is supported by axle journals thereof on deflection bearings. In the method, the central axle is pivoted about the deflection bearings thereof over an angle which is within a range of about 30.degree. to 180.degree.. By the effect of such pivoting, the variable-crown roll and the mantle thereof are shifted away from the nip, so that the nip is opened. This shifting is produced by the axis of pivoting of the deflection bearings being situated by a certain eccentricity distance further away from a nip line of the closed nip, than the axis of rotation of the roll mantle.

    • Method and apparatus in the headbox of a paper machine and in its approach pipe system. In the headbox, pulp suspension is fed through the approach pipe system and a pressure screen arrangement, if any, to a distributing header part, from which the pulp suspension flow is conducted through a turbulence generator section and further to a lip section. A pulp suspension jet is discharged from a lip aperture of the lip section onto a forming wire or into a throat defined by a pair of forming wires. At least part of the approach pipe system, the distribution header part, and the turbulence generator section are arranged to have two or several substantially parallel pulp suspension flow passages. The different passages operate substantially simultaneously in parallel, when the headbox has been set to operate in a higher flow rate range. One or several of the substantially parallel flow passages are completely closed after the turbulence generator section, when the headbox is being set to operate in a lower flow rate range. With the aid of the substantially parallel flow arrangement, the flow rate of the headbox has been arranged to be adjustable substantially in a range from maximum flow rate to minimum flow rate, in which a ratio of maximum flow rate/minimum flow rate is about 4.

    • A closed press section of a paper machine for removing water from the paper web passing therethrough. A compact press roll combination is provided with several press nips being formed in association with various rolls, and between which the web runs supported by roll surfaces without substantially long free draws. The press section comprises a first nip formed by two press suction rolls, through which two felts pass, the first felt functioning as a pick-up felt and moving the web from a pick-up point through the first press nip, and the second felt moving the web from the first nip to the second press nip of the press section. The second press nip is formed at a lower circumference of a smooth-surfaced, large diameter center roll, through which the second felt runs. Another smooth-surfaced, large diameter center roll is mounted in bearings and has a circumference located a short distance from the circumference of the first center roll, with a third press nip being formed at an upper circumference of the second center roll, and through which another press felt is guided. The web is detached from the smooth surface of the second center roll after the third press nip and is conveyed to the drying section of the paper machine. The paper web is essentially conveyed along a path shaped like an S or a mirror image thereof around the two center rolls, so that both sides of the web are pressed against a smooth surface of a respective center roll.

    • Fastening of a profile bar to adjustment spindles at a discharge opening of a head box of a paper machine. A series of fastening holes or recesses are made into one edge of the profile bar and provided with chamferings. In the end of the adjustment spindles situated next to the discharge opening, a recess is provided with a series of screws being fitted in one side thereof. These screws are provided with ends coresponding to the chamferings in the fastening holes of the profile bar. A second set of screws coaxial with the first set of screws are provided in an outer wall of the recess, with inner ends of the second set of screws being provided with parts corresponding to the outer chamferings of the fastening holes in the profile bar. The inside or first set of screws can be locked in a position such that, when the profile bar is attached into connection with the inside screws by the holes and the chamferings thereof, a center plane of the profile bar coincides with an axial center plane of the adjustment spindles. The profile bar can be locked into position by the outside or second set of screws.

    • A glide shoe arrangement for a variable crown roll is disclosed. The roll comprises a fixed central axle on which a hollow cylindrical roll mantle is rotatably journalled. A series of piston-glide shoe arrangements are fitted along the length of the roll between the axle and the inner surface of the roll mantle and are adapted to be loaded by hydraulic pressure fluid so that each piston loads a corresponding glide shoe against the inner surface of the roll mantle to control the distribution of nip pressure in a nip formed by the variable crown roll and a counter roll. The piston-glide shoe arrangements are fitted in cylinder bores formed in the axle. Spherical surface bearings are fitted between the loading pistons and the glide shoes, the center of curvature or rotation of the bearing surfaces being located on the side of the glide shoe. A pin-shaped projection is fitted in the loading piston and extends through the spherical bearing. A sealing articulation arrangement is situated between the pin-shaped projection and either the glide shoe or a projection part attached to the glide shoe. The pressure fluid is passed through ducts from the loading space of the cylinder bore through the pin-shaped projection and into hydrostatic lubrication spaces on the glide shoe.
