    • In a process for producing a tubular collagen casing from a hide collagen source which comprises the steps of comminuting said collagen and forming a slurry, swelling said collagen with acid, then extruding, coagulating, tanning, and drying, the improvement which comprises the steps of substantially completely swelling collagen, in which the epidermal layer and hair has been removed, with a relatively concentrated weak non-toxic acid having a dissociation constant in water of from about 1.times.10.sup.-6 to about 1.times.10.sup.-3, e.g., lactic acid, citric acid, etc., for a time sufficient to effect substantial swelling of the collagen and then comminuting the collagen for forming a slurry. An advantageous feature of this improvement is that it permits forming desirable collagen casing from a collagen source obtained from a hide which has been subjected to substantial liming.

    • This invention relates to an improved process for producing a polymer having pores substantially micellar in size and uniformly dispersed throughout the polymer. The formation of the pores is accomplished by incorporating a material in admixture with the polymer, dispersed as micelles, then converting the resultant admixture to a solid phase, and extracting a substantial proportion of the material in micellar form by swelling the solidified polymer with a solvent and converting the micelles to their monomeric constituent. Microporous films prepared in this manner are particularly useful as bacterial filters, binder compositions for ion exchange resins, and the like.

    • Sausages, such as frankfurters and bolognas, formed in synthetic casings are more easily peeled by soaking the casings or coating the inner surface, either at the time of manufacture or after stuffing with sausage emulsion, with water-soluble or waterdispersible high molecular weight film forming or substantive carbonyl or sulfonyl containing derivatives of a fluorocarbon. The soluble fluorocarbon derivative is preferably a fluoro or perfluoro ester, amide, ketene, isocyanate, etc. The fluorocarbon derivative is preferably applied to frankfurter sausage casing in the form of a solution or dispersion at the time of manufacture just prior to drying the casing. Fluorocarbon solution or dispersion may also be applied to the soak water for larger casings of the type used for bolognas or may be applied internally to coat such casings at the time of preparation. The use of casings soaked or impregnated with these water-soluble or water-dispersible fluorocarbons facilitates removal of the casing from the smoked and/or cooked sausages at a time when untreated casings could not be peeled from the sausage.
