    • A high performance, high capacitance gain, electric connector for data transfer applications. At least eight sequentially positioned elongate contact members are connected in a series of signal pairs. A first signal pair includes a fourth contact member and a fifth contact member. A second signal pair includes a third contact member and a sixth contact member. In addition, a third signal pair comprises a first contact member and a second contact member. Finally, a seventh and an eighth contact member are in a fourth signal pair. One member of each contact member pair is configured differently from the other member of the pair, the respective contact members being oriented relative to one another such that they substantially remain in generally parallel planes, but define non-parallel paths. Each of the third and fifth contact members mounts a plate-like extension oriented in a first direction and in respective planes generally parallel to one another. Each pair of extensions are separated by a first dielectric such that a first capacitor is formed. Furthermore, each of the fourth and sixth contact members mounts a plate-like extension oriented in a second direction and also in respective planes generally parallel to one another. Each pair of extensions are likewise separated by a second dielectric such that a second capacitor is formed. Each contact of each contact member pair has a plug engaging portion and a board engaging portion, the plurality of contact members having a selected shape, being arranged relative to one another, and being housed collectively by a dielectric casing so as to minimize crosstalk during data transfer.

    • An opto-electric jack is provided which can be used as a drop-in replacement for a standard electrical jack such as an RJ-type or D-subminiature type jack. The opto-electric jack includes housing having a receptacle for receiving an optical plug which is coupled to a fiber optic cable, and a plurality of electrical terminals for connection to an electrical circuit. Preferably, the terminals are arranged in a predetermined array which corresponds to the terminal array (or footprint) of a standard electrical jack. An opto-electric conversion circuit is disposed within the housing, and is operable to convert optical signals received from the optical plug into electrical signals for transmission to the electrical circuit via the terminals, and to convert electrical signals received from the electrical circuit via the terminals into optical signals which are transmitted to the optical plug. The opto-electric conversion circuit preferably includes a light emitting diode or diode laser for converting electrical signals to optical signals for transmission along the fiber optic cable, as well as a photo diode or photo transistor for receiving optical signals sent along the optical cable and converting the same to electrical impulses for transmission to the electrical circuit.

    • A modular jack connector mounted on a main printed circuit board and having a receptacle into which a modular plug of an electronic component is inserted. The connector includes a housing, a first set of contacts arranged in the housing each adapted to engage one of the contacts of the plug, a second set of contacts at least partially arranged in the housing and adapted to engaging the main printed circuit board, contact coupling circuit means for electrically coupling the first and second sets of contacts, a capacitor for providing impedance to high frequency noise and interference and a metallic shield at least partially surrounding the housing and connected to a grounding region on the main printed circuit board. In one embodiment, the capacitor is a flexible laminate assembly including first and second conductive sheet members and an intermediate insulative material. Further, the capacitor has a plurality of folded pleats including a first pleat arranged at one end of the laminate assembly and a second pleat arranged at an opposite end of the laminate assembly. The first conductive sheet member is electrically coupled at the first pleat to the contact coupling circuit means, and the second conductive sheet member is electrically coupled at the second pleat to the metallic shield to thereby ground the first set of contacts through the capacitor. The contact coupling circuit means may include toroidal coil pairs which function separately as either a differential mode filter or a common mode filter.

    • A modular plug and multi-pair cable assembly provides reduced near-end crosstalk between two signal pairs of the cable. A modular plug has a plurality of wire-receiving passages disposed in first and second planar arrays spaced one above the other, with the passages of one planar array being staggered in position with respect to the passages of the other planar array. An end of a first wire of each of two signal pairs is received in respective wire-receiving passages of the first planar array and an end of a second wire of the two signal pairs is received in respective wire-receiving passages of the second planar array. A first pair plane in which the wire ends of the first signal pair are situated intersects a second pair plane in which the wire ends of the second signal pair are situated. In this manner crosstalk between the two signal pairs resulting from magnetic and electric field coupling is reduced.
