    • A dual channel receiver system for receiving polarized signals, which system reduces cross-interference between the signal channels by utilizing adaptive filter equalization means responsive to the input received signals and to error control signals for providing a plurality of weighting signals which are used to combine selectively with the input received signals to reduce the errors, including particularly cross-polarization and noise errors therein. The channels each include decision-directed error signal generating means for providing such error control signals. The system also includes means for preventing system failures wherein both received signals fade simultaneously under which conditions data reversal in the channels could occur and wherein one received signal fades under which condition the same data is produced in both channels.

    • A modem in which the transmitter uses spectrum spreading techniques applied to sequentially supplied input bits, a first group thereof having one spread spectrum sequence characteristic and a second group thereof having a different spread spectrum sequence characteristic, the spread spectrum bits being modulated and transmitted. The receiver generates complex samples of the received modulated signal at a baseband frequency and uses a detector for providing signal samples of the complex samples which are time delayed relative to each other. A selected number of the time delayed samples are de-spread and demodulated and the de-spread and demodulated samples are then combined to form a demodulated receiver output signal.

    • A method for processing a voiced speech waveform when the periods and amplitudes thereof may be non-uniform so that the intelligibility thereof is adversely affected. In accordance with such method successive portions of the speech waveform are processed so that each portion has a substantially uniform period and the intelligibility thereof is enhanced. In some instances the processing may be such as to provide in addition substantially uniform peak amplitudes in each processed portion. The voiced speech waveform enhancement technique may further be used in conjunction with methods for processing unvoiced speech waveforms so as to enhance the intelligibility thereof.

    • An apparatus for simulating the characteristics of a signal channel which uses two or more cascaded delay lines each of which in one embodiment has a single input and a plurality of tapped outputs. The tapped output signals from each delay line are each multiplied by randomly characterized signals and the multiplied signals are combined to supply an input signal to the next succeeding delay line. The input signal to the first of the cascaded delay lines is the channel input signal and the output of the last of the cascaded delay lines is the simulated channel output signal. The randomly characterized signals associated with all but one of the delay lines may be signals having random polarities or having random phases while the randomly characterized signals associated with the remaining one of the delay lines has Gaussian characteristics. Appropriate control of the amplitude of the Gaussian characterized signals permits an approximation to be made of the energy distribution of the signal channel which is being simulated.
