    • A steering control safety mechanism is provided for a bicycle having a cylindrical head tube, a hollow steerer tube rotatably positioned in the head tube, a fork, and a stem releasably attachable to an upper end of the steerer tube for rigidly fixing a handlebar to the steerer tube. The safety mechanism includes a cylindrical torque transfer member positioned in the steerer tube, a wedge member positioned in the steerer tube below the torque transfer member, and a bolt rotationally positioned in the passageway of torque transfer member, supported on the torque transfer member, and aligned to laterally offset the wedge member from the torque transfer member and cause the torque transfer member and the wedge member to form a jam fit. A first steering control path is defined in the steering mechanism by connections between the handlebar, stem, steerer tube and fork. A second steering control path is defined in the steering mechanism by connections between the handlebar, stem, torque transfer member, wedge member, steerer tube and fork. The second steering control path is utilized upon the failure of the steerer tube. A method of maintaining steering control of a bicycle is also disclosed in which a bicycle having a handlebar, stem, steerer tube, fork, and connections thereamong is provided with a backup steering control system which is operative upon failure of the steerer tube.

When the rear wheel is moved upwardly with respect to the frame, the axle traces a complex curvilinear axle path generally upwardly, moving first rearwardly to a rearwardmost position, then forwardly along the upward axle path. The rear suspension transmits the pedal force generated by the rider efficiently into forward moving force without compressing the suspension appreciably.

    • The variable tension pulley system including a drive pulley, a slave pulley, a belt interconnecting the drive pulley and slave, a tensioner assembly positioned between the drive pulley and the slave pulley and in engagement with the belt. The tensioner assembly includes an elongated rack, a drive rod rotatably positioned on the rack, the drive rod having opposing ends and being selectively rotatable in a positive rotation or a negative rotation. The tensioner assembly also includes a drive block positioned on each end of the rod and in moveable engagement with the rack, each of the drive blocks being moveable along the length of the rod upon rotation of the rod, the drive blocks moving toward each other when the rod is rotated in the positive direction, and the drive blocks moving away from each other when the rod is rotated in the negative direction, a slide block slidably positioned on the rod adjacent to, inside of and in selective engagement with each drive block, and in slidable engagement with the rack, each slide block being moved toward the other slide block by the associated drive block when the drive blocks are moved toward each other, and a tensioner pulley attached to each slide block, each tensioner pulley in engagement with one of the opposing belt spans. The tensioner pulleys displace the opposing belt spans closer together upon positive actuation of the tensioner system in the positive direction. The use of the variable tension pulley system on an upper body exercise machine using a fan is also described.

    • A pump head comprising a main body defining a chamber and having a top end and a bottom end, a force transmitting member slidably positioned in the chamber adjacent to the top end of the main body, a resilient collar positioned in the chamber adjacent to the bottom end of the main body and in engagement with the force transmitting member, and a camming device pivotally mounted at the top end of the main body. The collar defines an axial cavity having an inner wall and an inside diameter. The camming device has first, second and third cam surfaces in selective engagement with the force transmitting member. The second and third cam surfaces act to displace the force-transmitting member into the chamber to different extents to compress the collar. Compression of the collar decreases the inner diameter of the collar, and thus causes the collar to sealingly engage the valve stem positioned in the axial cavity. Compression of the collar at differing levels allows the pump head to work with many valve stems of differing sizes.
