    • An apparatus for treating fractures of the femur including a screw and an intramedullary rod. The screw has a threaded portion and a smooth portion. The rod has a head, stem and a longitudinal bore. There is at least one pair of coaxial holes through the stem, transverse to the longitudinal axis of the rod, for receiving first anchoring means, such as a nail, screw or bolt, to secure the rod within the marrow canal of the femur. There are at least a proximal pair of coaxial holes and a distal pair of coaxial holes in the head of the rod in an angled direction toward the femoral head relative to the longitudinal axis of the rod. The distal pair of head holes are adapted to slidingly receive the screw to permit the threaded portion of the screw, in use, to engage the femoral head and to allow sliding compression of a femoral neck or intertrochanteric fracture. An optional second anchoring means which will also allow sliding compression and an optional set screw are also provided to adapt the fracture device to a variety of applications.

    • A prosthetic ligament assembly includes a nonaugmented prosthetic ligament for permanently replacing a natural ligament spanning first and second body members, such as the femur and tibia, and a bone screw adapted for tensioning the prosthetic ligament during implantation. The prosthetic ligament includes a load bearing member intertwined into a plain braid from a plurality of biocompatible, high strength, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene yarns. Each yarn includes at least fifty fibers and has a tensile strength greater than or equal to about 100,000 psi. The load bearing member has a gage section and a loop at each end thereof for anchoring the load bearing member to the body members. The load bearing member is preloaded to remove slack therefrom. The load bearing member may be used alone or may be formed into a hollow braid having a core disposed within the hollow portion of the braid to permit radiographic visualization of the prosthetic ligament. A sheath may be friction fit or molded onto the exterior of the gage section. The assembly also includes one or two bone screws for complimentary engagement with the loops of the load bearing member. The bone screws have a tapered section extending beneath the head of the screw to the shank for tensioning the prosthetic ligament during implantation.

    • A noise elimination circuit, especially for a hearing aid, which removes all sound below a predetermined level and transmits a compressed sound range for all sounds above a predetermined level. The circuit uses a field effect transistor as a voltage variable resistor to transmit a signal when the sound signal is being compressed or is over a predetermined level and block the signal when the sound signal is not being compressed or is below the predetermined level. The field effect transistor drain to source resistance is varied by transmitting a signal indicative of the compression or signal level to the gate of the transistor, such that the gate voltage is higher than the source voltage when signal transfer is desired and the gate voltage is less than the source voltage when no signal transfer is desired. A switch is provided to defeat the noise elimination circuitry.

The load bearing member may be used alone or may be formed into a hollow braid having a core disposed within the hollow portion of the braid to provide shape for the load bearing member. A sheath may be friction fit or molded onto the exterior of the load bearing member to prevent abrasion of the fibers.
