    • Regulation of idling speed involves the production of a first error signal by comparing engine speed with a reference idling speed, and then deriving from the first error signal in an amplifying PI controller, proportional and integral components that are added together, for use of the PI sum signal as a reference value signal for the displaceable stop position. The latter is compared to the actual stop position to provide a second error signal for control of electro-pneumatic valves of a positioning device that displaces the stop. Both the proportional and integral components produced in the controller vary assymetrically about the reference idling speed, so that regulation operates more strongly when the engine speed is too low than when it is too high, except for a dead zone on either side of the reference idling speed. When the driver actuates the throttle, a switch signal designates that the idling condition is no longer present and a lower engine speed threshold defines a starting mode of operation at lower speeds and a higher engine speed threshold distinguishes the "drive" mode from the partial load mode. Suitable operations of the displaceable stop during mode transitions and during operations in non-idling modes are provided. The controller output at the end of the last idling interval is stored for use when the engine returns to the idling mode.

    • A method and an arrangement for controlling exhaust return quantities of an automatic-ignition, internal combustion engine comprising a camshaft-driven piston injection pump and an exhaust control element in an exhaust return pipe. Pressure pulses occurring in an output pressure line of the injection pump during the injection-active delivery stroke are directly or indirectly detected as regards their pulse duration as the injection duration T.sub.E and their pulse intervals as the injection period T.sub.P. A certain injection stroke or a certain quantity of fuel to be injected per work cycle may be assigned, pump-specific, to each pair of values of these quantities through a known pump stroke curve. To control the return quantity of exhaust in dependence upon the quantity of fuel injected, the dependence between the pairs of values of T.sub.E, T.sub.P on the one hand, and control quantities for the return quantities of exhaust on the other hand, are stored in an at least two-dimensional identification field. Accordingly, it is possible for each pair of values of T.sub.E, T.sub.P determined in operation to retrieve the associated control quantity for the return exhaust quantities and to use that control quantity for controlling an exhaust control element. If the reciprocal value of the injection period T.sub.P is proportional to the rotational speed, other operating parameters, such as pressures and/or temperatures, may also be taken into consideration in the determination of the particular control quantity for the return quantities of exhaust.

    • An actuator for use as part of an electrically heated thermal delay valve (FIG. 1) or switch (FIG. 2) includes a thermally responsive plate (12) the periphery of which is fixed and the central part of which forms a temperature-dependent control element. The actuator also includes a metal carrier plate (9) which has a PTC element (10) mounted on it and which is free to move in a direction normal to its surface between stop abutments, and at least one spring (11) which electrically contacts the PTC element (10) and biases the carrier plate (9) towards the thermally responsive plate (9) to ensure that it is constantly in thermal contact with the carrier plate (10). This ensures that a direct thermal contact between the PTC element and the thermally responsive plate is constantly maintained which results in consistently reproducible functions being achieved with the apparatus by virtue of this direct thermal contact. The thermally responsive plate (9) may be biased towards the carrier plate (10).

    • A pneumatically actuated adjusting device, particularly for throttle flap adjustment on mixture-compressing combustion engines, with a diaphragm held between a housing upper portion and a housing lower portion. This diaphragm forms a vacuum-charged working chamber with the housing upper portion. With the housing lower portion it forms a chamber open to ambient atmosphere. A guide bushing projects from the housing upper portion on the atmosphere vented side of the diaphragm and is rigidly connected to it. The diaphragm is also rigidly connected to two concentric spaced diaphragm plate pairs. The outer diaphragm plate pair is connected to a pipe moving inside the guide bushing. This pipe has one or several recesses, with a ball in every recess. Indentations in the guide bushing have diameters corresponding to the ball diameter, with the depth determining the stroke of the first adjustment stage. The inner diaphragm is rigidly connected to a control piston inside the pipe. This control piston has a recess. After moving the ball into recess, the stroke of the pipe is lengthened. The pipe may project outwardly through the guide bushing from the housing and is loaded by a compression spring in a direction opposite to the applied vacuum pressure.
