    • A bar code scanner system includes a laser light source that periodically produces a light beam that is swept across a bar code label. The laser light source is periodically turned "on" and "off" according to a duty cycle. A detector produces a first electric signal representative of received bar code label reflected light and ambient light when the laser light source is on, and produces a second electric signal representative of received ambient light when the light source is "off". A demodulator circuit, coupled to the detector, provides a first gain to the first electric signal and provides a second gain to the second electric signal. The gains applied are selected such that the signal and signal component produced solely as a result of the ambient light will significantly cancel out one another when the signals are combined. A filter, coupled to the demodulator circuit, receives the electric signals from the demodulator circuit and reduces out-of-band signal components such as noise. When the duty cycle of the laser light source is equal to 50%, the first gain is equal to the inverse of the second gain.

    • A void and spot discrimination apparatus and method for successfully decoding bar code symbols having imperfections therein. A first and a second scan are performed, and a signal return is obtained, in which information is obtained related to a smallest size black bar and white space, as well as a largest size black bar and white space. The signal returns from the first and second scans is sent to a decoder, and third and fourth scans are performed. The signal returns from the third and fourth scans are altered based on the smallest/largest sizes obtained from the two previous scans, in order to eliminate potential ink spreads and print voids. The process is alternated in this manner until a successful bar code decoding is made.

    • In order to decode from electrical signals derived by a photodetector which responds to the light returned from the relatively less reflective (black) bars of the code and relatively more reflective (white) bars (also known as spaces), these signals must be digitized into a digital data signal where the black and white bars are represented by opposite logic levels, (for example logic high voltage levels representing the black bars, and logic low voltage levels representing the white bars). The high logic levels are pulses which are separated in time by the low logic levels. A cascade of amplifiers is used to amplify the bar code signal from the photo detector. An amplifier having a logarithmic signal compression characteristic is included in the cascade, preferably after an amplifier which serves to differentiate the signal. The amplified signal is applied to a digitizer including a comparator which is sensitive only to the leading edge. Additional features are networks which enable the maximum gain of amplifiers in the cascade to be varied in accordance with a digital code, amplifier circuitry which provides linear amplification until the signal level reaches a threshold at which time amplification follows the logarithmic compression characteristic, hysteresis which prevents the comparator from being reset until a transition between a signal corresponding to black and white bars is detected, which hysteresis is a fixed voltage level, and circuits for setting the comparator to a state corresponding to a white bar (logic low).

    • A successive approximation A/D having dual comparators for allowing a larger range of analog input signals to be converted into digital form. One comparator is an N-channel device, and the other comparator is a P-channel device. The A/D switches to either the N-channel device or the P-channel device based upon whether the first two comparisons the determine the most-significant bit and the next-most significant bit are a "11", in which the N-channel device is selected, or anything else, in which the P-channel device is selected. Switching circuitry is included to output the proper comparator based on these two comparisons.Control circuitry is also provided to allow for successive conversions using only a single address read. A one-half clock cycle reset occurs at the start of every MSB comparison for every n-bit read, and this reset goes to every component in the A/D except the latch for the LSB, which must be held for at least one more clock cycle before since it has not yet been output to the data bus as yet. Gate circuitry is also added to the input of the D/A portion of the A/D, in which the LSB is not allowed to be input to the D/A until after the MSB comparison has been performed for the next n-bit read.

    • An improved miniature scanning module for scanning and reading data fields having images or symbols such as bar codes, adapted to be included in a scanning application such as a portable transaction terminal. The scan engine of the module has an oscillator apparatus in which at least one side of a vertical coil cuts lines of magnetic force from an independent fixed magnet assembly and has a rotor and a stator which are molded interconnect devices in which electrical circuits are formed by surface plating or printing during multiple-shot molding of the parts. The rotor is supported by a plurality of metal alloy flexures depending from the stator, which flexures both mechanically support the rotor and transmit electrical power and signals between control circuitry on one or more printed circuit boards on the stator and electrical elements on the rotor. A semiconductor laser diode mounted on the rotor scans in one dimension when the rotor oscillates. A collection optic such as a parabolic mirror mounted on the rotor adjacent to the scanning laser also oscillates with the rotor and collects and directs return light to a photodetector mounted on the stator at the focal point of the collection optic. The flexures define an axis passing through the photodetector, about which the rotor oscillates, and thus return light from which data representing bar codes can be derived is detectable at all angles of oscillation.

    • A system for bar code reading and scanning is provided having automatic gain control for accurate reading of bar codes over a range of distance. An amplifier within the system provides a plurality of selectable amplification gain levels for increasing the size of the signal received by a digitizing element. A processor is programmed to select the gain level. The system has a light source, preferably a laser diode, and a laser diode circuit, which provides accurate setting by the processor of the laser optical power output. The laser diode is calibrated according to each selected gain level of the amplifier such that the system can scan within a desired range of distances from the system to a bar code. The system successively scans a bar code, with each scan being at a different amplification level. In the alternative, a signal size detector provides a signal representative of the size of the signal to the digitizer. Utilizing this detector, the system successively scans a bar code and switches the amplification level responsive to signal size.

    • A control system for a scanning motor that may operate at constant power, which has a control circuit including an H-Bridge connected across the drive coil of the motor. The control circuit operates under microprocessor control for digitally generating selected high current and a low current thresholds, which can be changed to enable the scanning motor to be operative over a large range (e.g. 3.3 v to 8 v) of supply voltage and to control the arc over which the motor oscillates and, therefore, the scan angle of an optical beam which scans a bar code. The control circuit turns the current to the drive coil on and off when the high and low thresholds are reached thereby varying the current which the motor draws which determines the scan angle and scan rate and average current draw, which may be maintained constant for constant power consumption.
