    • The presence of a drape on a thermal treatment system for ensuring sterility of a sterile medium contained within a thermal treatment system basin is determined by the use of a drape identifier and corresponding detector. When a drape containing the identifier is placed on the corresponding thermal treatment system, a detector senses and verifies the drape identifier to determine the presence of the drape on the thermal treatment system. A controller receives a signal from the detector indicating whether or not a drape is present on the thermal treatment system. If a drape is not present on the thermal treatment system, the controller prevents thermal treatment system operation. Various drape identifiers may be utilized to indicate the presence of the drape on the thermal treatment system, such as bar codes, mechanical and optical keys, light filter patches disposed on the drape passing various intensities or bands of light, reflective material segments disposed on the drape or reflective material used to construct the drape itself for reflecting light from a light source toward a light detector, and magnetic media in the form of magnetic strips disposed on the drape or a magnetic pigment or resin additive incorporated into the drape material.

    • The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for preventing damage to drapes and to heating and cooling mechanisms used in conjunction with apparatus for containing and thermally treating sterile liquid, and to preserving the sterile field when using such apparatus. A surgical drape is combined with a sensor, preferably attached to the drape, to detect whether or not liquid is present in a drape container conforming to a heating/cooling basin. An alternative embodiment employs sensors at opposite surfaces of the drape to measure conductance and, thereby, leakage through the drape. A microprocessor in each embodiment receives a signal representing, for example, an electrical conductance measurement from the sensors and determines if liquid is present, or alternatively if the conductance is sufficient to represent the presence of a leak. If liquid is not present or a leak is determined to exist, the microprocessor disables a temperature controller for the basin to prevent damage to the drape and heating and cooling mechanisms.

    • A surgical drape for use in a thermal treatment system having an automatic dislodgement mechanism for dislodging congealed liquid is accomplished by a drape having either a coefficient of friction approximately in the range of 0.4-1.0 as measured against steel per ASTM 1983 a metalocine-based olefin film having a flexibility approximately in the range of 10K-12K psi secant modulus measured by ASTM D882, a securing mechanism, or a preformed container portion having ribs or ridges to prevent the drape from being drawn beneath the automatic dislodgement mechanism. The securing mechanisms may be attached to the drape either at the ends of a drape portion hanging down from a top surface of the system, or at a location coincident the top surface of the machine. Further, the securing mechanisms may be separate units disposed on the drape subsequent to disposal of the drape in the basin. The securing mechanisms ensure that there is only a sufficient amount of the drape portion disposed in the thermal treatment system basin to form a drape receptacle without leaving any margin for excess portions of the drape to be drawn beneath the dislodgement mechanism. Alternatively, the drape may include a preformed container portion having ribs disposed in the container portion walls to allow air beneath the container portion to prevent the container portion from being drawn by suction against the basin and beneath the dislodgement mechanism.

    • A surgical drape for use in a thermal treatment system congealing a sterile medium within a basin and automatically dislodging the congealed sterile medium adhered to the drape adjacent basin walls is accomplished by a drape having a drape portion covering the system housing with part of the drape portion disposed in the basin. The drape may further include a pre-formed container portion fitted to match the contour of, and being disposed within, the basin. The container portion may accommodate various shaped basins and include individual fluted sections, drape deformities, or an inflatable bladder surrounded by the fluted sections for facilitating dislodgement of the congealed medium. Further, the drape or pre-formed container portion may include a substantially annular bladder, or a bladder having a plurality of individually inflatable sections for manipulation of the drape relative to the basin to dislodge the congealed sterile medium. Alternatively, the bladders may be disposed between the drape or container portion and bottom of the basin for manipulation of the drape as described above. Moreover, the drapes may include stirrups to secure the drape to the system. A pump or bellows inflates and deflates the bladders via a piston having a reciprocating motion within a chamber, or, alternatively, via separate connections for inflation and deflation which are controlled by selective actuation of solenoids. The individually inflatable sections are inflated and deflated one section at a time in sequential order to manipulate the drape relative to the basin to dislodge the congealed sterile medium.

    • Sterile surgical slush is maintained at substantially its freezing temperature to prevent both melting and formation of solid ice pieces. The slush is initially formed in a refrigeration mode wherein a basin containing sterile fluid medium is cooled to well below the freezing temperature of the medium to thereby rapidly lower the medium temperature. Upon formation of the slush the system is placed in a maintain mode wherein the container temperature is kept at the freezing temperature of the medium. In the preferred embodiment the maintain mode is effected by electrically energizing one or more thermoelectric modules and deenergizing a refrigeration system in which the refrigerant fluid is passed through an evaporator disposed in thermal energy transfer relation to the basin. In alternative embodiments the refrigeration system itself is controlled to keep the container temperature at the freezing point during the maintain mode.
