    • A musical tone generator includes first and second tone generator units respectively having a plurality of musical tone generation channels, a designating device for designating tone colors of musical tones, and a CPU for enabling respective tone generation channels to be selectively assigned with different tone colors. The usage of the plural tone generator units is also controlled by discriminating whether or not the input performance data can be processed by the first tone generator unit. When the CPU determines that the input performance data can be processed by the first tone generator unit, it controls musical tone production in the first tone generator unit based on the performance data. When the CPU determines that the input performance data cannot be processed by the first tone generator unit, it controls musical tone production in the second tone generator unit based on the performance data.

    • A video display control system displays a multicolor animation pattern on a screen of a video display unit. The video display control system is mainly constructed by a video RAM (VRAM) and a video display processor (VDP). The VRAM stores animation pattern data, display position data and at least two color data. The VDP reads these data and makes an animation pattern image displayed in at least two colors at a display position on the screen. The animation pattern image, two colors and display position are determined by the animation pattern data, two color data and display position data. In another video display control system, the VRAM stores at least two sets of animation pattern data, display position data and color data. When displaying two animation patterns, the VDP effects a logical operation on the two color data with respect to the overlapping portion of the two patterns and makes the overlapping portion displayed in a new color corresponding to the operation result. When the animation patterns overlaps, the VDP can also deliver a collision signal in place of the logical operation, thereby enabling a CPU to recognize the position of the overlapping portion.

    • A musical tone signal generating apparatus generates a musical tone signal whose tone color can be changed independently of a pitch or a frequency of the musical tone signal. The musical tone signal generating apparatus comprises a shift register on which sampled data of a predetermined waveform are initially loaded. The sampled data in the shift register are shifted at a frequency corresponding to a rate of change of the tone color, and each sampled data shifted out of the shift register is subjected to a predetermined operation such as a multiplication by a predetermined coefficient and is fed back to the shift register. The sampled data in the stages of the shift register are selectively outputted by a selector controlled in accordance with selection control data formed based on the pitch of the musical tone so that the sampled data are outputted at a rate determined by the tone pitch. The musical tone signal is then formed based on the thus outputted sampled data. The shift register may be replaced by a random access memory, in which case the sampled data are sequentially read at a repetition rate determined by the pitch of the musical tone signal and the sampled data in the random access memory are modified at an interval determined by the rate of change of the tone color.

    • A servo circuit for an information recording and reproducing apparatus such as a Compact Disc player detects relative mechanical vibrations of a pickup head with respect to a recording medium and changes a servo loop gain for positioning the pickup head to a high gain when the level of the detected mechanical vibration is high to obtain a high servo capacity and changes the servo loop gain to a low gain when the mechanical vibration is low to reduce power consumption and thereby minimize generation of heat. In one embodiment of the invention, an error signal due to mechanical vibration and one due to recording medium conditions such as spots and flaws of a disc are discriminated from each other by detecting acceleration applied to a main body of the apparatus. When the level of acceleration is large, the error signal is regarded to have been caused by the mechanical vibration and the servo loop gain is changed to a high gain whereas when the level of acceleration is small but the error signal is large, the error signal is regarded to have been caused by recording medium conditions and the servo loop gain is changed to a lower gain than normal.

A string protector comprised of a connecting section having first and second resilient tongues is situated within the peripheral notch.
