    • A fail-safe, magnetically coupled head positioner latch assembly for a Winchester-type disk drive comprises a rotatably mounted latch member including an outwardly extending latch arm and tang, and a solenoid assembly. The latch arm is adapted for engaging the head positioner in a parked position, and rotating to a non-interactive position with the latch arm being non-interactive with the head positioner. Magnetic coupling force between a permanent magnet structure and the solenoid assembly causes the latch arm to remain in the non-interactive position during normal disk drive operation. Activation of the latch is accomplished by applying current to the solenoid which generates a magnetic field opposite to that of the permanent magnet structure causing the rotatably mounted latch assembly to rotate so that the latch arm engages the head positioner. The tang is adapted for interacting with a permanent magnet structure as the latch arm engages the head positioner, whereby the magnetic coupling force between the tang and the permanent magnet structure imparts a torquing force to the latch arm which restrains the head positioner in the parked position. Actuation of the head positioner upon initiating normal disk drive activity positively disengages the head positioner from the parked position.

    • A system for slimming pulses which represent the data stored in a hard disk drive assembly. The pulse slimming system comprises a delay line with the pulse applied in one polarity to a central tap. The same pulse is applied in the opposite polarity to taps along the delay line on either side of the central tap. The pulses applied to either side of the central tap are controllably attenuated by amplifiers controlled by a microprocessor. The signal which is present at the output of the delay line is the sum of the original pulse with the attenuated pulses applied to either side of the central tap of the delay line subtracted from the leading and trailing edges of the pulse applied to the central tap.

    • Magnetic data read/write apparatus is disclosed for use in connection with a magnetic data storage disk. The apparatus includes a read/write head mounted onto a positioning device along with several electrical leads that extend from the read/write head to an interconnect pad mounted on the positioning device. The interconnect pad includes an electrically-conducting layer divided into several separate conducting paths corresponding to the number of leads to the read/write head. A portion of each separate conducting path is exposed to facilitate electically-conducting connections to the read/write leads. Additional portions of each separate conducting path is exposed to facilitate electrically-conducting connections to other electrical connectors so as to obviate further manipulation of the leads to the read/write head. The apparatus further includes a flex cable structure having a conducting layer divided into several separate conducting paths corresponding to the conducting paths in the interconnect pad. A portion of each conducting path in the flex cable forms an electrically-conducting connection to one of the separate paths in the interconnect pad. The flex cable may further include a second conducting layer similarly divided into several separate paths with the two conducting layers of the flexible cable partially overlapping in a region configured to form a pre-amplifier circuit.

    • A Winchester or hard disk drive, with a head positioner rotor is provided with a bidirectional preloaded stop. The head positioner rotor is provided with a plate having two spaced stop surfaces, both of which engage a single stop, which may be in the form of a U-shaped spring, which is partially compressed, and which has two pivoted, high strength plastic members against which the stop surfaces of the head positioner rotor impinge. The plate may also be provided with a notch into which the armature of an electromagnet fits so that the head positioner rotor is locked in the position with the heads adjacent the drive spindle, when the drive is turned off. When the rotor is energized, and the disks get up to speed, the electromagnetic is energized, and the head positioner rotor is freed to move to a selected track for reading or writing digital information.

To accommodate the difference in thermal coefficients of expansion of the steel cylinder forming the outer periphery of the motor, and the aluminum disk assembly, an aluminum disk mounting sleeve is provided which extends for the full height of the disk assembly, and makes a thermal shrink fit around the steel motor cylinder, with the engagement between the two parts being limited to a section toward the center of the overlapping surfaces of the two parts. The aluminum storage disks and spacers between them have a slight clearance from, and are clamped between the top and bottom of the aluminum mounting sleeve.

For multiple data heads used in an individual disk drive unit, a first group of heads is partitioned from the remaining heads based on a particular selection criteria, and the remaining heads are arranged into a second group. The first group of data heads then operates at a higher transfer rate than the second group of data heads, and an algorithm for reading and writing data at the different rates is created.

    • A plurality of movies are distributively stored in digitally encoded form on a mass storage unit such as a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives (RAID) disk drive array such that they can be viewed on demand by multiple users. A video server receives movie requests from users, and retrieves and transmits the requested movie data from the RAID array to processors at the respective user locations. The processors decode the retrieved data to produce video picture and audio information and display the corresponding movies on monitors. Temporal instantaneous digital data rate signatures for the movies are computed and stored, and a current composite signature is computed by summing the signatures for all movies currently being shown. When an additional movie is requested, the signature for the additional movie is combined with the current composite signature to produce a new composite signature. If any part of the new composite signature exceeds the maximum data rate capability of the server, the signature for the movie is shifted forward in time by a predetermined increment, and again combined with the current composite signature to produce a recalculated new composite signature. This is repeated as required until a new composite signature is obtained with no part thereof exceeding the maximum data rate capability of the server, and retrieval and showing of the additional movie is initiated at time corresponding to the total time shift.

    • An electro-mechanical latch includes a solenoid having an armature movable from a normally biased first position to a second position in response to an electrical current applied to the solenoid, and means for holding the armature in the second position to allow subsequent removal of the current from the solenoid. When the armature is in its first position, it is adapted to latch a device in a parked position. The armature is non-interactive with said device in its second position. The electro-mechanical latch of the present invention further includes means for releasing the holding of the armature in response to the device returning to its parked position whereby the armature returns to its normally biased first position to latch the device. An important advantage of the present invention is that the current need be applied to the solenoid only for moving the armature to release the device. The current may then be removed since the armature will be held in a position which is non-interactive with the device.

    • An improved switching regulator power supply with a variable duty cycle is disclosed which forms part of a compact Winchester disk drive system having a storage capacity in excess of 380M bytes of information. The switching regulator is designed for frequencies in excess of 80 kilocycles per second and may therefore be construced using smaller capacitive and inductive elements. Also, very low heat dissipation and high regulator efficiency may be achieved by the improved power supply to drive a brushless D. C. motor encased within a hard disk assembly where no separate fan or cooling system is used to aid in heat removal. Circuitry is provided to control the motor speed while simultaneously limiting the motor current to a predetermined level. This is a achieved by controlling the voltage applied to the motor by suitably adjusting the duty cycle of the switching regulator. A filter is provided to ensure that the switching regulator current fluctuations are not reflected in the current drawn from the power supply. At the start when the D. C. motor E.M.F. is zero, the switching regulator causes significantly higher current to flow through the motor than is drawn from the power supply through a current multiplying effect. These unique features provides significant advantages in a Winchester disk drive using thin film media whose overcoming high level of initial stiction-friction forces is important and desirable.
