    • The tool of the invention includes a wire packing element which is set in abutment with the side of carding wire being wound onto a carding drum end forces the other side of the wire into abutting fit with the previously wound wrap of wire. While so doing, the tool subjects the portion of wire just received by the drum's surface to numerous impacts while still forcing the aforesaid abutments. It is believed that these impacts alternating with reliefs from the added force causes the wire to shift minutely to attain the stablest configuration which would then not shift during use of the clothed carding cylinder but retain the desired patterning of points through long termed use.

    • A card coiler can changer is illustrated, being generally of the linear type, wherein elongated guide means are provided for use together with power operated means to eject a full can and replace same with an empty can positioned positively beneath a coiler head. A storage position is provided for receiving and positively positioning an empty can preparatory to a subsequent can changing operation. By guiding the empty can along a linear path, causing the full can to be ejected, a return stroke positions the device for receiving and storing another empty coiler can in reserve.

    • A ventilated carding cylinder for allowing heat generated in the carding cylinder during operation to be dissipated. The carding cylinder includes an internal, longitudinally extending, air flow passage and impeller means provided therein for moving air through the air flow passage during operation of the carding cylinder. This movement of air aids in dissipating heat generated by the carding cylinder during the fiber carding process. Reduction of heat in the carding cylinder can minimize the risk of fire occurring in the fibers and also thermal growth of the cylinder during operation.

    • Metallic clothing having metallic wire teeth bent at a double angle. The lower portion of each tooth is angled by an first angle with respect to vertical, and the upper portion is angled at a second angle with respect to vertical. The upper portion terminates at the tip, or point, of the tooth. This double-angle tooth profile is angled in the direction opposite to the general direction of travel of fibers being carded. The upper side portion of each tooth is tapered inwardly to the tip, and the rear edge of the upper end of each tooth may be provided with a forward curvature towards the point of the tooth. Alternate embodiments include single angled teeth and a double-angled teeth, each having a base portion substantially the same height as the teeth.

    • Method and apparatus for the intermittent cleaning of carding flats by the use of pressurized air. A carriage having a plurality of nozzles is oscillated intermittently back and forth on a track adjacent to flats revolving about a carding cylinder of a carding machine. Pressurized air delivered from the nozzles on the flats blow trash and debris from the clothing of the flats downwardly into a vacuum plenum for disposal. A proximity sensor is provided for sensing a flat to initiate the cleaning cycle, wherein the carriage and nozzles are activated for cleaning a particular carding flat. After the cleaning cycle, delivery of pressurized air to the nozzles is ceased and is again activated upon the next predetermined cleaning of a carding flat.

Reaction force sensors (C) is mechanically coupled between rotational drive (B) and carding machine frame (12). Sensor means (C) senses the reaction forces on the rotational drive caused by the torque of feed roll (10) during feeding of fibrous mass (F) through nip (26). Sensor (C) includes a displaceable torque arm (50) and a sensor member (56). Sensor (56) senses the displacements of torque arm (50) which is affixed to rotational drive (B).
