    • The welded seams are formed between facing edges of vertically oriented plate sections by submerged arc welding. The bottom edge of an upper section is formed with intersecting bevelled faces defining a V-shape nose in cross-section, and the upper edge of a lower thick plate section is formed with intersecting sloping faces defining a V-shape upwardly opening notch in cross-section. The sections are placed with the apices of the V-shaped crosssections in substantial alignment vertically to define opposite facing welding grooves having a common welding groove root. The faces defining the welding grooves are arranged at angles such that the welding groove sides diverge outwardly and upwardly from the root. Molten weld metal is progressively deposited along the welding grooves by submerged arc welding while the welding powder is supplied to the grooves both before and behind the pool of molten weld metal. The apparatus includes a welding wire feed guide, contact jaws for conducting current to the welding wire, a conductor for connecting the contact jaws to a source of welding current, and a powder feed pipe in the form of an inverted Y which is fixedly connected with the welding wire feed device. The outlet openings of the powder feed pipe are arranged, respectively, before and behind the contact jaws in the direction of weld formation. A pressure gas may be supplied to the powder feed pipe in advance of the Y junction.

    • A vapor-liquid separator includes an annular bladed section defining laterally open channels through which the vapor-liquid mixture flows and vertically directed gas flow channels through which the separated vapor flows. An outer discharge jacket receiving the liquid extends to above the annular bladed section and includes an insert for narrowing a portion of the liquid flow path and fins for deflecting the liquid from the centrifugal flow path, imparted by the bladed section, into a downwardly directed vertical flow path, thereby to avoid splatter during discharge. A baffle plate located in a gas discharge flow pipe arranged above the bladed section serves to provide additional gas drying.

    • A centrifugal vapor-liquid separator is formed by a vertically extending riser pipe closed at its upper end and laterally enclosed by a collecting shell so that a collecting space laterally surrounds the riser pipe. An impeller provided with two sets of separate passageways and located at the upper end of the riser pipe flows the vapor-liquid mixture from the riser pipe through one set of passageways into the collecting space and gives it a swirling motion. The liquid and vapor separate in the collecting space with the separated liquid exiting from the space either upwardly or downwardly along the inside wall of the shell. Vapor carried over into the collecting space below the impeller flows out through the other set of passageways extending upwardly through the impeller into a vapor discharge pipe located above the upper end of the riser pipe.

    • A device for adjustably positioning a structural element in a dust-laden environment, such as for positioning impact casing elements in a metallurgical blast furnace, consists of a motion rod connected between a drive member and the elements to be positioned and a shield through which the motion rod extends, the shield is constructed of plates which form a slot and of a slide movably positioned in the slot and having a bore through which the motion rod extends. The slide covers an opening through the plates and forms a closure against the passage of dust into the drive member. Further, the bore surface through the slide is shaped to afford not only longitudinal movement of the motion rod but also limited pivotal movement and, in addition, the slide affords transverse movement.

    • An adjustable impact casing for use in a shaft furnace is formed of a plurality of upwardly extending segments. The segments are arranged in an inner circular row enclosed by an outer circular row. In each row, segments are spaced angularly apart and are offset to the segments in the other row with their upwardly extending lateral edges arranged in overlapping and substantially contacting relationship. The segments are pivotally supported about axes extending transversely of the upright axis of the casing and as segments in the inner row are secured to one adjustment drive arrangement while the segments in the outer row are secured to another adjustment drive arrangement. A control circuit is connected to the adjustment drive arrangements for regulating the movement of the segments between spaced positions. Initially, the segments in one of the rows are spaced from the segments in the other row. Then, the two rows are moved together toward a new position with one row of segments moved into the new position. Finally, the other row of segments is displaced into contact with the row of segments already in position.
