    • An acoustic emission monitoring technique for detecting the growth or formation of cracks or other flaws in structures is disclosed. A growing crack emits acoustic signals which can be detected by an appropriate sensor on the structure surface. It has been found that the rate of amplitude buildup decreases as distance from a sensor to the site of the acoustic event increases. Thus it is possible by selecting only acoustic signals which have at least a selected build-up rate, to eliminate most background noise and other signals originating further than selected distance from the sensor. Thus, the formation and growth of cracks in the selected area can be accurately monitored in an acoustically noisy environment.

    • An improved diffusion molding apparatus and a process using it are disclosed. Particles of suitable metal alloys such as titanium are placed in a mold comprising a surrounding toroidal yoke and unidirectionally movable rams. The mold is encapsulated and evacuated, then the particles are consolidated through high ram pressure while the mold is at a temperature up to about 75*F below the alpha-beta transition temperature for titanium alloys. Preferred process steps and mold configurations are disclosed. The resulting parts have densities as high as 99.5 percent of wrought metal and excellent grain structure and physical and mechanical properties.

    • A millimetric mixer package is fabricated in block construction manner of inexpensive lightweight materials such as plastics, after which the surfaces to be conductive are gold-plated. An integral collection box forms a part of the package, for the disposition of a circuit board and other elements in the output end of the mixer. The mixer provides a hybrid junction of magic T type for 2 millimeter wave inputs, one of which may be a local oscillator, the junction being coupled by way of a resultant balanced output signal to impedance matching ramp elements, at the output end of which are disposed biased diodes which are adjustably positioned for optimum noise figure. The conductors providing the diode bias terminate at a circuit board in the collection box whereat the difference frequency signal output may be taken.
