    • An improved adaptive echo cancelling system and method is disclosed. The system and method utilizes linear code spacing and is particularly well suited for echo cancellation of full scale signals. Echo cancellation is effected by use of digital-to-analog converters functioning as a multiplier receiving first digital signals representative of a received speech waveform signal and second digital signals representative of the termination network on the line, which termination network causes and defines an echo reflection of the received signal. The output of the multiplier is summed and the sum is then subtracted from the echo components of the received signal to thus achieve echo cancellation and to produce an error signal that is utilized to continuously reduce error between the actual and estimated echo waveforms. Provision is made to inhibit error indications due to circuit generated coding noise and/or predetermined small detected errors to thereby enhance system operation.

    • An active current limited in only the ring side of a telephone circuit has the control branch of a current mirror resistively connected across a supply voltage for establishing the magnitude of loop current in its other branch. A first resistor is also connected between adjacent one sides of the two branches for causing the control voltage and loop current to vary as a function of loop length. Extraneous metallic voltages on the A and B leads are AC coupled to associated inputs of a differential amplifier having its output connected through a second resistor to the one side of the control branch for modulating the loop current provided by the other branch. Opposite sides of the second resistor are fed back to associated input terminals of the amplifier. The amplitude modulated loop current is also fed back to an input of the amplifier for minimizing the affects of induced metallic voltages on the tip and ring lines.

This circuit is converted to a balanced modulator by omitting C5 and C6. In an alternate embodiment of a single sideband modulator that requires only a pair of switched capacitors C11 and C12, a 4-phase switch means alternately charges C11 and C12 with associated ones of the quadrature-phase input signal voltages while alternately connecting C12 and C11 as feedback capacitors across A1, the polarity of each capacitors feedback voltage being reversed each time that capacitor is connected across the amplifier. This circuit is operated as a balanced modulator by omitting one of the capacitors.

    • A first embodiment of an integrable switched capacitor modulator comprises a differential input operational amplifier A1 having a virtual ground potential impressed on its inverting input terminal; capacitors C1, C2 and C3; and switch means operative for alternately (1) charging C1 with an input voltage while connecting C2 and C3 in series with A1 and across it, respectively, for causing it to produce an inverted version of the input voltage, and (2) discharging C2 and C3 while connecting the sample of the input voltage on C1 across A1 for causing it to output a non-inverted sample of the input voltage. The modulated output signal from A1 is preferrably bandpass filtered to eliminate baseband spectral components fed through A1 when C2 is connected in series with the input terminal thereof. In a second embodiment which is insensitive to feedthrough and which requires only two capacitors C1 and C4, the switch means alternately (1) charges C1 with the input voltage while connecting a prior sample of the input voltage on C4 across A1 for causing it to output an inverted sample of the input voltage, and (2) changes C4 with the input signal while connecting the sample of the input voltage on C1 across A1 in the opposite polarity for causing it to output a non-inverted sample of the input voltage. This embodiment has particular advantage as a demodulator since the built-in sample-and-hold function provides low pass filtering of the output signal of A1.

    • An echo canceller is connected in the four-wire, voice-frequency path of a communication circuit and includes an end delay analyzer which is bridged between the four-wire transmit and receive paths, and a variable delay and an echo synthesizer connected in series between the received signal path and one input of a summation circuit. The other input to the summation circuit is connected to the four-wire transmit path along which the return echo signal is propagating. Any difference appears as a residual echo at the output of the summation circuit.The end delay analyzer, in response to the received signal and the echo return signal, provides an output control signal that adjusts the variable delay to compensate for the terminal circuit delay which occurs between the echo canceller and the four-wire to two-wire hybrid. This inserts delay in the received signal, which is applied to the echo synthesizer, thus simplifing the echo synthesizer structure as the variable component now must only compensate for the active part of the impulse response of the terminal circuit.

    • Echo cancellers provide echo return loss enhancement by subtracting a replica of the echo signal from the echo returned via the two-wire to four-wire transition. The echo replica is derived from the signal incoming from the far end by signal processing which consists of a convolution and adaptive modeling that is used to model echo paths caused by the imperfections of the two-wire to four-wire transition. An improved echo return loss enhancement (ERLE) is obtained by dynamic range compression of the incoming signal prior to processing and dynamic range extension following processing. The range extension is slaved to a control signal from the ranged compressor, providing proper compensation for the compressed signal, but insuring that processing noise and other extraneous signals have been adversely treated.
