    • In a plant for making acid by absorbing in water a gaseous oxide produced by oxidizing in a combustion chamber a suitable substance, such as ammonia, with compressed air, the air compressor is driven by a gas turbine and a steam turbine. The former is operated by the tail gas from the absorber after it has undergone heat exchange with the combustion chamber. The steam turbine is supplied from a boiler heated by the combustion, and the exhaust steam is condensed and returned to the boiler via an economizer heated by the gases leaving the combustion chamber. In the illustrated embodiment for the production of nitric acid air is compressed by the low-pressure compressor 1 and high-pressure compressor 2 driven by the gas turbine 9 and the steam turbine 10. Ammonia is vaporized in the vaporizer-intercooler 8, and both the air and ammonia are led to the combustion chamber 7, where in the presence of platinum catalyst 12 they react to give nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. The products flow through the economizer 14 and are absorbed in the tower 16. The tail gas flows through 18 into the heat exchanger 19 and then drives the gas turbine 9. In the combustion chamber is a boiler consisting of primary and secondary evaporators 23 and 24. The steam generated operates the steam turbine 10 and then flows through the condenser 26 and economizer 14 back to the boiler in the combustion chamber. Surplus energy may be utilized to drive a dynamo 29. Other acids, such as sulphuric, phosphoric, and carbonic acids may be similarly made in this plant.
