    • a seek procedure for a hard disk drive which provides a significant reduction in acoustic noise as well as high performance fast seek times is described. The seek procedure lowers the peak acceleration for short seeks and imparts a smooth transition from a sine seek to an exponential arrival at the target track. The seek procedure provides an error free feedforward signal derived from a single sine table. The procedure which contains a time domain sinusoid acceleration feedforward combined with a phase-plane trajectory controlled velocity which, near seek completion. The procedure is constructed so that the acceleration begins at zero and, in the fashion of a sine, increases to a maximum, decreases to a minimum and then increases again until a computed switchpoint is reached. The switchpoint is determined in-situ, to provide a smooth and continuous velocity transition from sinusoid to exponential. The velocity trajectory is computed from a look-up table. The procedure is implemented using conventional seek controller servo components and commercially available operation software.

    • A packaging arrangement for smoothly and conveniently providing small hardware items to an assembly line operator is described. The items are fastened onto a flexible band, lined up in the order in which they are to be installed on an article being assembled. The band is divided into equal segments defined by index marks, each segment containing the hardware items required for the assembly of one article. The items are fastened to the band off-line using securing features fashioned from the band itself in a manner and orientation by which each item can be plucked from the band with a tool that can grasp the item, pull it off the band, transport it to the article being assembled, and install it on the article without intermediate disengagement from the tool. The utilization of the band improves the productivity and reliability of manually assembled articles such as disk drives.

    • A method of manufacturing a disk drive is disclosed in which servo information is written in tracks on a disk surface, the track width performance of the associated read/write transducer is measured, the track width performance is analyzed and a data track pitch is established. Based on the data track pitch established, a track location formula for data tracks on the surface is defined. For a disk drive with a plurality of read/write transducer-media surface combinations, a track location formula for data tracks is established for each combination. Disclosed is a method of measuring a track width performance of a read/write transducer which includes the steps of writing a first test pattern having a first waveform with the read/write transducer at location t on the surface of a magnetic medium, reading the first test pattern and measuring an error rate of the signal, followed by moving the read/write transducer in a first direction a predetermined distance from location t and writing a second test pattern comprised of a waveform different than the first waveform, moving the read/write transducer in a second direction to a position distance d from location t and writing a third test pattern comprised of a waveform different to the first test pattern. The first test pattern is read at location t and the error rate of the signal is measured. A disk drive including a disk having a first magnetic surface, a first read/write transducer associated with the first magnetic surface for reading and writing data in tracks in a plurality of zones each zone having a read/write frequency, a first load beam for supporting and positioning the first read/write transducer at a plurality of locations above the surface of the magnetic media as disclosed and the drives produced utilizing the steps of writing servo information in tracks on the surface at a track pitch, followed by measuring a track width performance of the read/write transducer and establishing a track pitch for data tracks as a function of the measured track width performance.

    • A data storage device (10) includes a stator (20), a rotor (50) rotatable about the stator via a pair of bearings (26), a cover (70), and two data storage disks (80). The stator includes a baseplate (22), and radially extending stator laminations (32) under the baseplate. The bearings are fixed in top and bottom ends of the baseplate. The rotor includes a spindle shaft (52), a hub (54), and a drive member (56). The shaft is fixed in the bearings, and the hub is fixed to a top end of the shaft. The drive member is fixed to a bottom end of the shaft, at a side of the baseplate opposite from the hub. The cover is fixed to a bottom of the baseplate, surrounding the drive member. The cover helps prevent contaminants such as dust from entering a clean chamber of the data storage device that surrounds the shaft.

    • A method for loading single head in a hard disk drive includes the following steps: mounting a head assembly (30) in a baseplate (10) of a hard disk drive, the head assembly comprising an actuator arm (32), a suspension (34) and a HGA, the baseplate engaging a motor (110) and the HGA is positioned close to the motor; biasing the suspension by a mounting tool (50) from the original position, the mounting tool comprising a cantilever arm (52), a pressing head (54) and a supporting rod (56), wherein, the mounting tool rotates to the suspension and gets down to press the suspension; mounting a disk (90) on the motor in the baseplate; and releasing the pressing head from the suspension, loading the HGA of the head assembly to a parking zone of the disk.
