[Also in Division F1] In the plant for purifying sea water described in Specification 1,024,571, the rotary compressor for moving the vapour from the evaporation chamber to the condensation chamber comprises an impeller having main blades preceded by inducer blades 308, 310. Each blade 308 and an adjacent blade 310 are formed from a single strip of metal or fibreglassreinforced plastics material which is bent into a loop at its centre and inserted into a bore 302 in the inducer hub 300. The loop is then expanded into contact with the bore by means of a tapered tool. A bush 326 of the same diameter as the cylindrical head of the tool, is placed on top of the tool and forced into the loop in succession to the tool. A tool 334, Fig. 17 (not shown), is then inserted between the blades 308, 310 to spread them into contact with the walls of a slot extending between the bore 302 and the periphery of the hub 300. The blades are held in this position by a member 346 bolted to the bush 326. Flexible U-shaped members 364, 372 strengthen the blades and reduce vibration. Slots 390 may be provided in the bushes 326 to allow the bushes to be expanded by means of plugs threaded into the ends of the bushes, whereby the blades are locked in place. The main blades are of similar construction and fixing.

    • 1,034,466. Plate-type heat exchangers. DESALINATION PLANTS (DEVELOPERS OF ZARCHIN PROCESS) Ltd. Aug. 1, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 30594/63. Heading F4S. [Also in Division B1] A horizontally arranged heat exchange assembly of a desalination system (see Division B1) is supported on stanchions 50 and comprises a plurality of dimpled contacting heatexchange plates 17 between spacer plates 55, 55 1 , 57, 57 1 aligned by vertical T-bars 68, 69, 63, Fig. 3 (not shown), arranged peripherally around the assembly and bolted alternately to upper and lower support plates 51, 49 respectively and to an intermediate plate 53 between which the heat exchange plates are compressed by nuts 61, 61 1 on threaded rods 59 the load being transferred to the support plates through straps 79, 89 and channel members 73, 93. Gaskets 103, Fig. 9 (not shown), between adjacent plates hermetically seal the spaces 105 between the plates, the edges of which are bent over to prevent the gaskets being displaced. The plates and gaskets contain ports, e.g. 138, 140, 142 at each end arranged so that sea water to be cooled flows upwardly through the assembly in spaces 105 in counter current to the fresh water and brine flowing in adjacent passages downwardly through the assembly. Each liquid flows in a serpentine path, the direction of flow reversing between passages. To connect a port, e.g. 138, with a passage 105, a gap is left in the gasket wall into which is inserted a corrugated metal strip 150 which prevents the gasket expanding into the gap and improves flow characteristics. In modifications the intermediate plate is replaced by a spacer plate, the plates may be arranged to provide paths for only 2 fluids and the aligning bars may be attached to the upper and lower support plates only.
