    • There is provided a coin handling apparatus which can be employed in public telephones and other coin fed apparatus. In a preferred embodiment the coin handling apparatus comprises a pocketed disc (100) arranged, in use, to cooperate with an entry portal (506) for receiveing coins and an exit portal (507) for dispensing coins, and drive means arranged, in use, to cause rotation of the pocketed disc (100), said drive means comprising a driving gear (200) and a driven gear (120) wherein the pocketed disc (100) comprises said driven gear (120), and the driving gear (200) is arranged such that it rotates the disc (100) in predetermined increments and rotation of the pocketed disc (100) can be paused between each incremental rotation.

    • An electronic coin validator comprising an inductive coin sensor (10) producing a predetermined response to a valid coin and a coin equivalent circuit (18, 20) which can be switched by a switch (14, 16) into operable connection with the sensor to produce an effect on the coin sensor similar to that of a coin but with the coin absent, and a comparator (26) for comparing the two sensor responses. The arrangement has the advantage of ensuring stability against temperature drift, small mechanical changes, aging and the like, because these disturbances have the same effect on both of the signals which are compared for coin validation purposes.

    • An apparatus for identifying coins uses inductive coupling of the coin with a pair of inductors. The apparatus includes a path for coins to be tested, first and second inductors for forming concurrent inductive couplings with the coin being tested, switches for energizing the inductors in specific manners so that a sequence of coin tests results, and a sensor for sensing the resultant inductive coupling for each of the tests in the sequence.

    • In coin discrimination apparatus, a coin under test rolls past first and second inductive sensors (C1, C2) which produce first and second coin signals (x.sub.1, x.sub.2) in dependence upon the coin under test. The coin signals are compared with data defining first and second stored windows (W.sub.1, W.sub.2) to determine acceptability of the coin. In accordance with the invention the data for the first and second windows (W.sub.1, W.sub.2) are stored respectively for providing both a first and a second window width (W.sub.11, W.sub.12 ; W.sub.21, W.sub.22), wherein the first window width corresponds to the width of a distribution of coin signals associated with acceptable coins of a particular denomination, and the second window width corresponds to the width of said distribution but excludes therefrom a range of values corresponding to fraudulent coins, and a coin under test is deemed to be acceptable upon the coin signals falling either within a first or a second acceptance condition wherein, for the first acceptance condition, the value of the first coin signal fails within the first window width of the first window (W.sub.11), and the value of the second coin signal falls within the second window width of the second window (W22), and for the second acceptance condition the value of the first coin signal falls within the second window width of the first window (W.sub.12), and the value of the second coin signal falls within the first window width of the second window (W.sub.21).

    • A coin validating arrangement for a coin operated machine, comprising a coin chute (5) having an upstream coil (8) for sensing a true coin and producing a Q signal output only when a true coin is properly inserted, an obturator (11) generally downstream of the true coin sensing coil, a coin acceptance coil (21) generally downstream of the obturator, and a validating circuit (41) which enables the coin acceptance coil to produce an A signal output which in turn generates an accept signal which activates the machine only when no Q signal output is being produced. In a preferred arrangement, an intermediate or zoning coil (18) produces a Z signal output as it watches the coin through the obturator from the Q coil to the A coil, and production of the accept signal is also dependent on the Z signal.
