    • A portable, interactive electronic training device for prompting a trainee on the proper sequence of steps for performing CPR, using a defibrillator and performing CPR in conjunction with the use of a defibrillator. The device simulates the obtaining of direct information about a patient's condition, such as ECG data collected directly from the patient. The device receives information pertinent to the treatment of the patient indirectly through an operator of the device. The device prompts a trainee on the medically appropriate action such as a defibrillation shock in response to the indirect and direct information. Indirect information is obtained through information processing means that includes means for prompting the operator of the device and means for receiving the operator's responses thereto. Prompts may include both questions and instructions, and in one embodiment the information processing means obtains the assent of the operator before causing the defibrillation shock. Indirect information may include information as to whether the patient is conscious, whether the patient is an adult, baby or child, and as to whether or not cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been performed. The device also prompts the user on proper placement of training electrode pads upon a simulated victim's chest by prompting feedback to the trainee if the pads are not placed on the conductive targets located upon the simulated victim's chest.

    • A method for constructing an instrument with a two-part plunger for subcutaneous implantation is provided. An incising body is formed by defining a non-circular coaxial bore and sharpening a distal bottom edge. A two-part plunger including a tongue blade assembly and a plunger assembly is constructed. The tongue blade assembly is constructed by sharpening a beveled end of a flat thin tongue blade and by affixing a straight tongue blade shaft to an end of the tongue blade opposite the beveled end. The tongue blade assembly has a length exceeding the coaxial bore. The plunger assembly is constructed by affixing a plunger to a plunger shaft on a distal end. The plunger assembly has a length exceeding the coaxial bore and is oriented adjacent to the tongue blade assembly. The two-part plunger is inserted through an end of the incising body.

    • The present invention relates to a device and methods for manufacturing and shipping goods using a work platform that easily converts into a protective cover for use during shipment of the finished good. The device of the present invention reduces waste generated by the manufacturing and shipping processes through the use of a platform capable of retaining a good during both assembly and shipment. When shipment is complete, the platform is preferably constructed of a material that is recyclable. During assembly, the work platform exists as a single, planar platform comprising a first support surface and a second support surface fixedly joined at an interface. During shipment, the protective cover exists as the first support surface and second support surface fixedly interconnected in a parallel orientation.

    • An apparatus and method for determining an optimal transchest external defibrillation waveform that provides for variable energy in the first or second phase of a biphasic waveform that, when applied through a plurality of electrodes positioned on a patient's torso, will produce a desired response in the patient's cardiac cell membranes. The method includes the steps of providing a quantitative model of a defibrillator circuit for producing external defibrillation waveforms, the quantitative model of a patient includes a chest component, a heart component, a cell membrane component and a quantitative description of the desired cardiac membrane response function. Finally, a quantitative description of a transchest external defibrillation waveform that will produce the desired cardiac membrane response function is computed. The computation is made as a function of the desired cardiac membrane response function, the patient model and the defibrillator circuit model.

    • A system to detect the presence or absence of T wave alternans is described based on statistical tests and periodicity transform. T wave and ST segment boundaries are detected in multi-lead ECG signals acquired from the regular clinical leads. Once the fiducial point and the above boundaries are delineated, computation of regular parameters like T wave amplitude, area under the T waves or segments of T wave, ST segment slope and/or the curvature of T wave are performed. Each parameter forms a rolling array of values with each successive beat. The array of values, or the time series, is used to make the decision about the T wave alternans. Two different methods are employed based on periodicity transforms and statistical tests. A set of numerical values (e.g. norm of the projection on to p-2 space, sums of adjacent terms after the trend removal, t-value, and number of deviations from alternans pattern) are all computed and compared to threshold values. Threshold values are computed from past information and experience with clinical databases and simulations. Final system comprises a software module, which can be part of the existing ECG monitoring programs as well as external defibrillator modules, apart from being stand-alone algorithms.
