    • An uncomplicated, easy to operate, relatively inexpensive, compact and powerful acoustical source hydro gun for use in a liquid environment is particularly effective in a multiple array for marine life management. The powerful output, compactness and non-complex features of this hydro gun enable its advantageous use as a seismic energy source for high resolution marine seismic exploration and for seismic exploration when lowered down into a well in the earth containing liquid. A cylinder containing a free-moving piston has water discharge ports near one end for admitting water when the hydro gun is immersed in water and for discharging water when the hydro gun is activated by a solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is mounted on a cylinder head block containing a small annular high pressure firing chamber charged with pressurized gas and closed by the solenoid valve. To fire this hydro gun, the solenoid valve is electrically energized, thereby opening a short flow path from the firing chamber into the head end of the cylinder. The sudden discharge of high pressure gas into the cylinder head end propels the water piston along the cylinder for suddenly discharging water through the discharge ports. The water piston blocks these ports thereby creating a cavity in the ambient liquid which collapses to produce a wideband frequency sharply-peaked pressure impulse rich in frequencies above 300 Hz. Hydrostatic pressure automatically returns the piston to its initial position at the cylinder head end.

    • An airgun impulsive energy source has an elongated shaft bearing surrounding the shaft of the reciprocatable shuttle for guiding the shuttle and preventing its operating or firing pistons from contacting their respective cylinder walls. The illustrative embodiment of this airgun is proportioned to be self-firing with a fast repitition rate. This airgun has an elongated cylindrical housing with discharge ports in a cylindrical wall positioned between the operating and firing chambers. The shuttle-guiding shaft bearing is positioned in the cylindrical housing between the ports and an operating chamber. This shaft-guiding bearing has a length which is more than 1.7 times the diameter of the shuttle shaft, while the operating and firing pistons have diameters which are slightly less than the diameter of their respective cylinder walls for eliminating contact of these pistons with their cylinder walls, thereby advantageously dramatically increasing the firing cycles which can occur before the need for replacing any worn parts. Moreover, only the shuttle shaft guiding bearing is replaced, instead of the cylinder walls. The housing includes internal through passages which convey high pressure gas longitudinally through the airgun so that it can be coupled to subsequent airguns connected in series with the first one. Thus, a single source of high pressure gas may be utilized and fed in series through a sequence of airguns forming a flexible "string" of airguns capable of being inserted into and used for cleaning pipes of heat exchangers, boilers, water heaters and other internal regions of closed vessels, which are normally very difficult or impossible to reach into for cleaning. The discharges of pressurized gas by the string of airguns in liquid, usually water, in such equipment is used to dislodge sediment and deposits from the internal surfaces of such confined regions so that the loosened foreign materials can then be flushed out by the flowing liquid.

    • A method and system are provided for well velocity shooting and vertical seismic profiling utilizing mobile seismic land sources for transmitting powerful seismic energy impulses into the earth. A plurality of nesting pairs of tanks are transported on a single vehicle to a well site where the tanks are unloaded and arranged in a suitable array, for example, in a linear array or uniformly spaced around the mouth of the well. The tanks each have a displaceable end portion serving as a diaphragm placed in contact with the ground near the well. Then the tanks are filled with a noncompressible liquid. The total effective mass of the liquid may be increased by adding density-increasing materials thereto. Air guns are suspended in the tanks submerged in the liquid therein. The air guns are fired in a predetermined manner, abruptly releasing pressurized gas into the liquid contained in the tanks for providing powerful seismic impulses which are transmitted into the ground by the displaceable diaphragms. Geophone equipment lowered into the well receives the resultant waves which have passed through the geological structures near the well, and the signals from the geophone equipment may be recorded and/or processed at ground level. Advantageously, a mobile system is provided in which a single vehicle can provide an array of four seismic sources instead of requiring two or four vehicles to provide a like number of sources.

    • A large-diameter, cylinder-shuttle airgun for seismic uses has a cylinder shuttle configured as a hollow, elongated cylinder body of revolution with an inwardly-facing cylinder guide surface and having two outwardly-extending, axially-spaced annular flanges. These two annular flanges are an operating flange at an upper end of the body of revolution and a firing flange at an intermediate region thereof. A cylinder skirt extends down below the firing flange, and the cylinder shuttle has an overall axial length L. The firing flange has a perimeter of outside diameter OD, and the ratio of L to OD is at least about 1 to 1. A cylinder housing of the airgun has a main inner cylinder structure encircled by the cylinder shuttle. This main inner cylinder structure may have an axial passageway of sufficient diameter for passing at least one compressed air hose and at least one multi-conductor electric cable axially therethrough. The housing provides an annular operating chamber for receiving the operating flange therein and has an annular firing chamber with removable interchangeable annular chamber walls for changing volume of the annular firing chamber. The skirt on the cylinder shuttle extends down into the firing chamber. The housing defines an annular discharge port positioned intermediate the operating and firing chambers and extending 360.degree. around the axis of the housing. By employing a firing flange of large OD, a Torus bubble is produced of large "C" radius in relation to its axis of revolution which provides enhanced peak pressure output and improved PBR compared with a standard airgun.

    • A land seismic energy source is provided having a rigid dome-shaped bell containing a substantially imcompressible liquid and an airgun for abruptly releasing pressurized gas into the liquid for generating powerful seismic impulses. The bell has a lower rim with a metal pan positioned below the rim for engaging the surface of the earth below the bell, and it is mounted for upward and downward movement relative to the bell. A resilient, flexible elastomeric diaphragm is mounted on the rim of the bell and extends across the bottom of the bell for retaining the liquid in the bell. The pan is provided with a rising, generally convex, upwardly extending surface on the bottom of the pan with the diaphragm initially resting on the upwardly extending surface on the bottom of the pan thereby assuming a generally concave configuration across the bottom of the bell, which results when the airgun is fired in reducing the amount of downward deflection of the diaphragm thereby reducing the amount of stretching of the diaphragm and increasing the life of the diaphragm. The rising, upwardly extending surface may be integrally formed on the pan or may comprise a steel hump which is welded to the pan using peripheral as well as plugged welds. The top surface of the hump is smooth all of the way to the bottom of the pan.

    • A sleeve shuttle air gun is described which can be fired by a solenoid valve without dumping compressed air into the ambient prior to firing, thereby avoiding the generation of premature impulses caused by such dumping and avoiding the heavy duty complex solenoid dump valves and two-stage dump valves of the prior art. The sleeve shuttle is automatically returned to its initial closed and sealed position after each firing of the airgun by the refilling flow of only one level of pressurized air without a separate low level pressure source to control the sleeve shuttle. A long acceleration path is provided so the sleeve shuttle attains velocity prior to opening the discharge ports for producing a sudden, powerful discharge. The end of the sleeve shuttle travels completely beyond the discharge ports, and is then damped by interaction with damper ports located beyond the discharge ports. The trigger chamber for initiating firing is defined by an inner annular lip at one end of the sleeve shuttle engaging the firing seal in the initial closed position and by an outer annular shoulder on the outside of the shuttle engaging an encircling seal. A replaceable stationary piston ring in sliding engagement with the inner wall of the sleeve shuttle and a replaceable stationary cylinder sleeve in sliding engagement with said annular shoulder accommodate wear. The volume of the firing chamber is changed by replacing a chamber on the opposite end of the air gun from the solenoid valve.

    • A long-life, low-maintenance air gun/hydro gun includes a one-piece, integral shuttle having an unusually long hollow shank with a firing piston whose configuration is the mirror image of the operating piston, except for the slightly smaller diameter "D" of the firing piston. The shank length L is at least 2.5 times D, and the whole shuttle is guided by this shank sliding within a shaft seal and bearing assembly. By virtue of this guidance, the perimeters of the operating and firing pistons are always kept slightly spaced from their respective associated cylinder walls for eliminating contact of these pistons with their cylinder walls for advantageously dramatically increasing the total number of operating firing cycles which can be accumulated in use before the need for replacing any worn parts, except for the operating and firing seals which are inexpensive. Thus, this air/hydro gun offers a low-maintenance feature. Further, it is only the shank-guiding bearing assembly which is replaced, instead of both of the cylinder walls; the perimeters of the two pistons do not become worn, and thus the operating characteristics (triggering/firing response) do not significantly change over long periods of repeated numerous cycles of operation, and triggering/firing " jitter" is avoided. In conjunction with the shank-guidance, a novel configured tapered wall surface of the operating chamber produces smoother acceleration and deceleration of the shuttle, so that operating stresses in the shuttle are reduced. This reduction in stresses plus the unitary one-piece construction of the shuttle provide a long operating lifetime for the shuttle. The housing of the air gun comprises two main components instead of the usual three. Therefore, only a single clamp ring holds the air gun together. Then, only one more clamp ring is employed to secure the outer housing of the hydro gun around the air gun. The change from air-to-hydro gun, and the change back to an air gun are both quickly and easily made on shipboard while at sea. The air gun and the hydro gun are less complex and lighter in weight than prior guns of comparable firing volumes, but they are powerful relative to their weight, thus being easier to handle at sea than earlier air guns or water guns. Advantageously, for controlling and modulating the acceleration and deceleration of fast-travelling shuttle the inner surface of the operating sleeve liner can be designed to have any desired configuration, because it is freed from the need to guide the rim of the operating piston by virtue of the fact that shuttle guidance is now provided along the shank. The effective bearing length guiding the shuttle shank is more than three times the O.D. of the shuttle shank. The resilient O-ring firing seal is maintained under continuous spring-loading for enhancing its sealing ability and for automatically supporting this firing seal continuously biased toward its sealed position, thereby contributing to consistent, reliable, repeatable firing characteristics throughout a long operating life and providing a larger throat opening for the firing chamber.

    • A plurality of submerged control station junction boxes each include a microprocessor having data storage and transmission capability, airgun firing and related electronic circuits to control a predetermined airgun or airgun groups. These junction boxes are towed at spaced positions along an airgun array. An electrical cable and sections of high pressure air supply line are detachably coupled to each junction box. The predetermined airguns to be controlled by a junction box are detachably coupled thereto. Thus, the number of airguns in the towed array can be changed by coupling or uncoupling junction boxes and the associated airguns controlled by them. The junction boxes are automatically cooled on shipboard by increasing low pressure air until a relief valve opens for establishing a continuous cooling flow of low pressure through a protective hose sheath and the junction boxes. Local electronic microprocessor units in the respective junction boxes serve as local control and communication stations, and they communicate through a bus line with a master control station on shipboard. The junction boxes include electrical capacitors charged during intervals between firings of the airguns. These capacitors are controllably discharged in response to command signals from the master station for firing the airguns. The junction boxes and a protective hose sheath containing the electrical power supply lines and containing communication bus lines to the respective junction boxes are pressurized with low pressure air during submerged towing for excluding water in the event of a leak.

The connector housing defines a cylindrical space carrying a spring-loaded piston. The inner end of this cylindrical space communicates with the liquid sealant chamber, and the outer end is exposed to the ambient liquid for applying ambient pressure to the piston for urging the piston away from the outer end of the cylindrical space toward the inner end. The fluid sealant chamber and the inner end of the cylindrical space are filled with waterproof sealant fluid material, for example such as waterproof grease. Thus, ambient liquid pressure plus the pressure resulting from spring force on the piston is applied to the waterproof sealant fluid material filling the sealant chamber enclosing the terminals and adjacent portions of the conductors. Consequently, this sealant material is always at a pressure exceeding the pressure of ambient liquid for preventing ambient liquid from seeping into the chamber enclosing the terminals. A second sealant chamber containing fluid sealant material similarly maintained at pressure exceeding ambient pressure is shown surrounding the end of the cable sheath where the conductors exit from the cable sheath for preventing seepage of ambient fluid within the cable sheath around the conductors.

    • An air gun is mounted in a reaction mass having an impulse-transmitting ground-contact plate movably mounted below the mass. This mass is in face-to-face contact with the plate over the major portion of the entire upper surface of the contact plate. Confined liquid is not employed. The air gun is charged with pressurized gas and fired, discharging the pressurized gas into the narrow horizontal interface region between reaction mass and plate. Rapid expansion of the discharged gas between mass and plate causes an intensely powerful seismic impulse to be transmitted into the earth. The air gun has a firing chamber for holding a charge of pressurized gas, a movable shuttle for suddenly discharging the pressurized gas, including upper and lower pistons with a hollow member connecting these pistons. A pedestal assembly carrying said shuttle is mounted from above to the reaction mass and extends down into the hollow shuttle member. When this air gun is fired, the lower piston moves away from a peripheral seal at the lower end of the firing chamber suddenly discharging pressurized gas from a central location radially outwardly into the narrow horizontal interface region. By suspending the pedestal assembly from above, powerful seismic waves can be generated using a relatively short shuttle stroke, and the gun can be positioned near the impulse-transmitting plate for directly discharging the pressurized gas into the interface region between plate and reaction mass.
