    • An electronic watthour meter for connection in a two-wire power distribution circuit comprises a shunt connected in one of the wires and an electronic circuit comprising a transconductance multiplier, a V to F converter and a reversible counter. The DC power supply of the electronic circuit is referred to the wire containing the shunt, which wire is always live, so that the electronic circuit "floats" electrically on this live wire. The first input of the multiplier can therefore be directly connected across the shunt, and the second input is connected via a high value resistance to the other wire so as to receive an input current representative of the voltage between the wires. To eliminate the effects of drift in the multiplier, the polarity of the input current to the multiplier and the direction of counting of the counter are periodically and simultaneously reversed by a square wave signal of 1:1 mark space ratio. The electronic circuit is implemented using LSI techniques.

    • A watt/var transducer utilizing the pulse width-pulse height modulation type of multiplying scheme wherein a stable squarewave is generated by switching from one reference voltage to another reference voltage, the output thereof is integrated to produce a stable triangular wave output, the gain of which can be simply adjusted by shorting the output of amplifying means to various points in a resistive means contained in feedback means from the output to the input of said amplifying means. The frequency of the triangular wave output is high relative to any alternating signal which may pass upon the power line to be monitored by the transducer such that those portions of said alternating signal sampled by the multiplier portion of the transducer appear to be non-alternating signals thereby rendering the transducer capable of multiplying alternating signals as well as non-alternating signals.

    • A two-way electronic kWh meter is disclosed for metering electrial power and energy consumption in a single phase or polyphase electrical system wherein power and energy may be imported to the system or exported from the system to another system. Pairs of analog signals representing current and voltage variables are derived. Each pair of analog signals is multiplied together to derive partial instantaneous power signals. These signals are summed and integrated to thereby provide a signal which is proportional to the total energy being imported or exported with respect to the electrical system. The output of the integrator is converted to a pulse train having each pulse proportional to the energy being imported or exported with respect to the system. The partial instantaneous power signals are also summed and averaged, with the polarity of the resulting signal being detected by a polarity detector. Depending upon the polarity of the signal being detected, an import or export record and display arrangement is connected to receive the pulse train to record the quantity of energy being imported or exported with respect to the system. An error correction system is also provided, wherein the phasing of the voltage variable signals and the phasing of the polarity detector is switched each time an output pulse is generated.

    • Metering kWh in a single phase, 3-wire, F.sub.L Hertz a.c. electrical system is accomplished by detecting the current flow in two lines of the three-wire system by means of a current transformer having two primary windings and a single secondary winding. The voltage in the system is detected by means of a potential transformer having the primary windings thereof connected across the load impedances and having the secondary thereof connected to a pulse width amplitude modulated multiplier. The multiplier derives a signal which is proportional to the current in the system and the detected voltage across the load impedances thereof. The output of the multiplier is converted to a d.c. voltage which is proportional to the total average power consumed by each of the load impedances with the d.c. average power voltage being converted to a pulse train by an analog-to-pulse rate converter. Thus the output of the analog-to-pulse rate converter is a series of output pulse signals having a variable signal repetition rate f proportional to the average power with each pulse signal representing a constant or quantized amount of electrical energy. A counter or register performs conventional accumulation storage and display functions in response to the series of output pulses delivered thereto from the analog to pulse rate converter.
