    • To boost RPM and to minimize the back and forth transfer of kinetic energy between a crank and a connector/reciprocating member in mechanisms having a stroke that is four times the crankpin offset, a connector which attaches the reciprocating member to the crank is weighted with counterweights to produce an effective connector center of mass at a location on the connector that, while rotating around the crankpin defines a motion perpendicular to the oscillation of the reciprocating member such that the resulting translational inertia of the connector is equal to but perpendicular and ninety degrees out of phase with the translational inertia of the reciprocating member so that their combined kinetic energy is constant, thus resulting in a zero transfer in energy between the crank and the connector/reciprocating member through each revolution unless external force is applied to the crank or to the reciprocating member.

    • A balanced spin motor assembly of a hard disk drive. The spin motor includes a spindle that is mounted to a base plate of the disk drive by a plurality of mounting screws that are attached to mounting holes of the spindle and base plate. At least one recording disk is attached to a hub assembly that rotates relative to the spindle. The hub assembly contains magnets that are coupled to a coil located within the motor. Energizing the coil with a current creates a torque that rotates the hub and spins the disks. The hub assembly has a plurality of equally spaced threaded apertures located at a top portion and a bottom portion of the hub. The spin motor can be balanced by attaching weight screws to the threaded apertures of the hub. Weight screws can be attached to the bottom portion of the hub through the mounting holes of the base plate and the spindle. Accessing the hub through the mounting holes allows the spin motor to be dynamically balanced while attached to the base plate of the drive.

    • The maximum safe operating speed or flywheels and shafts made of low tensile strength material is often determined by the speed at which radial tensile stress exceeds a radial tensile stress limit for the material. Circumferentially wound fiber composite material, for example, has a relatively low tensile strength along the radial direction perpendicular to the fibers. To increase the maximum safe operating speed, it is therefore desirable to form a fiber composite flywheel or shaft with radial compressive prestress. Such a prestressed flywheel or shaft has an outer annulus and an inner cylinder disposed in the outer annulus, and an annular layer of solidified bonding agent within an annular region between the outer annulus and the inner cylinder, wherein the outer annulus and the inner cylinder include substantial radial prestress induced by the bonding agent. The rim portion of a flywheel, for example, is formed from an outer ring (the annulus) and an inner ring (the cylinder, which is hollow in this case). Large, thick flywheels preferably have multiple cylindrical sections joined by such layers of bonding agent, and a plurality of the cylindrical sections each including an outer layer of relatively stiff fiber-composite material, and an inner layer of relatively compliant fiber-composite material within an integral matrix material.
