    • Lifting apparatus including two pairs of opposed backing plates of curved cross section mounted for horizontal swinging movement, each plate being mounted for horizontal and vertical swinging movement. Each backing plate has a resilient seal secured thereto in the form of a continuous pneumatic tube which projects outwardly from the plate to form a cushion and a seal, and is arranged with side sections and end sections forming a suction space. When each pair of plates is moved against a cylindrical article, suction is applied to the suction space bounded by the pneumatic tube to draw the article against the latter. This also draws the article against vertical friction plates on each backing plate and located adjacent side sections of the pneumatic tube thereof.

    • A vacuum lifting device for lifting articles having curved surfaces comprises at least one suction cup having a vacuum chamber subdivided into a plurality of segments which are displaceable relative to one another to conform to the surface of the article and means to automatically lock the segments at this position. More specifically, as a vacuum is formed in a vacuum chamber on the upper side of the segments and lifting force is applied to the vacuum cup, the segments are automatically locked into position at the predetermined configuration corresponding to the curvature of the article being lifted. Upon release of the lifting force, a biasing means returns the segments from their locked configuration to a released position.

    • Porous materials, such as cloth or unglazed ceramics or porous plastics which on account of their porosity defy ordinary vacuum pick-up, are made temporarily imperforate by applying to them a temporary coating of liquid, such as water, whereupon their porosity is momentarily sufficiently inhibited to permit their pick-up and transfer by suction, as by a suction cup device. The liquid coating is deposited either by rolling or spraying the liquid onto the porous material either from above it (FIG. 1) or from beneath it either for a single layer (FIG. 2) or for a plurality of layers thereof (FIG. 3).

    • For construction purposes, there is provided a novel method and apparatus for orienting and securing one panel to one or more panels of an array to comprise a wall, floor, ceiling or the like. The panel may be joined by contact adhesive along one longitudinal edge to the array or along two adjacent edges. In either event the apparatus insures fitting of the panel to the array prior ot the application of adhesive, withdraws the panel from the array along a predetermined path to a predetermined location for application of the adhesive, then contacts the panel edges to the array to distribute adhesive along the edges to be bonded and removes the panel to the predetermined position until the adhesive reaches its optimum setting point. Then all points of the edges to be bonded are cuased to contact simultaneously because the panel is moved along the predetermined path to its array position. One embodiment affixes panels in the vertical plane but brings them to the horizontal plane to facilitate the application of adhesive, and returns them for bonding without disturbing the final alignment. A modification of this embodiment enables tilting, angling, and skewing of the panel relative to a fixed floor or platform supporting the base of the machine to insure coplanar alignment of the panel to the array prior to bonding.
