    • The invention relates to the cold extrusion of a part having a polygonal interior and a cylindrical exterior. Instead of the usual process of forcing a polygonal punch into a billet in a single extrusion step, the new method employs a plurality of extrusion steps, first forming a lobed preparatory blank and then in a second extrusion step providing a punch and die combination whereby the external lobes of the intermediate part are forced radially inwardly. In the second extrusion step a polygonal punch is used to provide the proper polygonal interior surface. A cooperating die is provided with an upper lobed cavity for receiving the lobed preparatory blank and this die is oriented with respect to the polygonal punch so that the interior lobes of the die are exactly opposite the flats of the polygonal punch. Below the upper lobed cavity of the die is a cylindrical cavity of smaller diameter and between the two is a conical surface which directs the metal of the lobes inwardly into the die cavity opposite the flats of the polygon. The preferred polygon is a hexagon.

    • A chamber having a first end and a second end and receiving a billet having an aperture therethrough slidably receives through the first end a die. A mandrel slidably extends through the second end of the chamber into the aperture of the billet and has a conical section extending into the zone of deformation of the die. Hydraulic cylinders having piston rods operatively associated with the die and the mandrel advance the die into the chamber through the first end thereof against the billet end, and simultaneously and at the same velocity retract the mandrel from the second end of the chamber, the zone of deformation of the die and the conical section of the mandrel defining a converging annular passageway through which the billet is extruded to produce tubing. Another set of hydraulic cylinders is operatively interposed between the die and the mandrel to compensate for forces tending to separate the die and mandrel during extrusion of the billet therethrough, whereby to maintain the positions of the die and mandrel relative to each other fixed and thus to maintain constant the geometry of the annular passageway.

    • This disclosure is directed to a collapsible feed mechanism for advancing and retracting a rod or rod-like member, and in particular a ''''slender column,'''' which may be subjected to large compressive axial loads. The collapsible feed mechanism disclosed herein comprises a plurality of aligning plates and a drive plate all slidably mounted within a support cage. Power cylinders, connected to the drive plate by piston rods, advance and retract the rod, or slender column, which is also connected to the drive plate. The aligning plates and drive plate cooperate to centrally position, advance and retract the rod or slender column, e.g., an extrusion die ram, without bending or buckling the column, even when subjected to large compressive axial loads, e.g., the force of extrusion necessary to advance the die ram upwardly of a billet confined in a high pressure vessel, to extrude the billet into wire.
