摘要： A sofa sleeper comprises a stationary wooden sofa frame and a foldable sofa bed assembly mounted to the frame which is adapted to move between a fully folded or retracted position within the frame to provide a seat when used as a sofa and an extended unfolded position when used as a bed. The foldable sofa bed assembly includes pivotally interconnected head, body, intermediate and foot frame sections each including a pair of opposed side rails to which a wire fabric or plastic sheeting material is attached. The body frame section includes a pair of opposed cross tie members which extend between the side rails and are adapted to support a plurality of transversely spaced, longitudinal extending sinuous wire springs. Preferably, a rigidity bar extends between the cross tie members to maintain the cross tie spacing. The body frame section including the cross tie members and the longitudinally extending sinuous wire springs are located immediately beneath the mattress supporting fabric or plastic sheeting material so as to provide an improved cushion foundation when the sofa sleeper is used as a seating surface and an improved mattress foundation when the sofa sleeper is used as a bed.

If desired, an ankle bolster configured and dimensioned for supporting the lower leg and ankle portions is also provided. The chest member is formed of a plurality of preformed sheets of uniform thickness configured so as to provide recesses to accommodate the breasts and abdomen of the body and to provide supports at least for the sternum and collar portions. The abdomen member is formed of a plurality of preformed sheets of uniform thickness positioned one atop the other. This abdomen member is also configured so as to provide support for the pelvic region so as to generally straighten the lumbar spinal curve. The individual members are freely movable independent of each other so as to be portable and capable of selective relative positioning so as to accommodate the configuration of the body. Preferably, the individual members are enclosed in vinyl.

A relatively simple sofa bed includes a pair of generally U-shaped bases for resting on the floor, each base being defined by vertical front and rear arms, a rearwardly inclined cross bar extending between the front and rear arms, a track mounted on the crossbar, a rectangular seat frame connected to the base by a pair of link arms, one of which is pivotally connected to the front arm of the base, and the other of which is connected to the track, so that the front end of the seat frame can be lifted and rotated forwardly from the inclined sofa position to the horizontal bed position, and the back frame pivotally connected by one link arm to the rear arm of the base and by another, generally C-shaped link arm to the rear end of the seat frame, whereby the back frame is normally supported in a steeply inclined sofa position, but during movement of the seat from the sofa position to the bed position corresponding movement of the back frame occurs from the inclined, sofa position to the horizontal bed position.

摘要： A convertible sitting/reclining furniture article comprises a main frame and a seat element which is supported at a predetermined elevation above ground. A bed frame can be pulled out of and pushed into the main frame in a drawer-like manner and includes a front side, a rear side and two lateral sides. An extension element is mounted on the bed frame for displacement between a retracted position and an extended position in which the extension element is disposed at the predetermined elevation to form an extension of the seat element by a five-bar kinematic linkage at each of the lateral sides of the bed frame. Each of the kinematic linkages includes a steering lever pivotally mounted at a first region of the extension element and at a first portion of the bed frame, and two steering links more remote from the front side of the bed frame than the steering lever and adjacent to the steering lever. The steering links are articulately connected to one another at a connection region and one of them is pivotally connected to a second region of the extension element while the other is pivotally connected to a second portion of the bed frame which is spaced from said first portion by a distance exceeding the distance between the first and second regions of the extension element. The steering links assume a straight-line orientation with respect to one another in the extended position of the extension element to block the connection region against pivoting in at least one of its pivoting directions.

The latch includes a connecting link pivotally connected at one end to the body section having at its opposite end an elongated slot including a latching notch, a latch plate slidably mounted on the connecting link having an elongated slot which overlies a portion of the length the slot in the connecting link, and a pin connected to the head section angle making a lost motion connection within the connecting link and latch plate slots. The head section of the bed frame is sequentially movable from a lowered position where it is coplanar with the body section, to a ready or "latch cocked" position which exposes the latching notch in the connecting link for receiving the head section pin, to a TV position where the head section is held in a raised, angulated position with respect to the body section by the head section pin being captured in the latching notch in the connecting link, to a release position where the head section pin is released from the latching notch and the head section is movable back to its lowered position.

When the mechanism is in its seating configuration, the first pivot is near a line which extends between the second and third pivots to prevent inadvertent movement of the members to their seating positions.A support leg is pivoted at the rear of the back support member, and a link swings the support leg outwardly when the back support member moves to its sleeping position.The seat-supporting scissors linkage includes a first link which is in a same vertical plane as the base, and a pair of parallel links which are pivoted to and are on opposite sides of the first link.When installed in an article of furniture, the seat support members of the mechanisms are connected to a seat frame, and the back support members are connected to a back frame. In one type of sofa, the mechanisms are part of a cushion-supporting assembly which is movable relative to a frame assembly which has a back frame and a side frame for enclosing the rear and sides of the cushion-supporting assembly. In another type of sofa, relative movement between the back and seat support members in the seating position is prevented by connecting them to detachable side arm members.

Studs project laterally from the pedestal in the chair position and are engageable in the latch bracket in the chair position. The convertible chair and bed may be incorporated in various styles of furniture and may be provided with a fixed, swivel or rocking base.
