    • A method and apparatus for controlling a spindle motor having at least one winding in a storage device are proposed, the storage device having at least one data storage medium rotatably supported by the spindle motor and having a plurality of tracks on each surface thereof including data regions and nondata regions, and a transducer assembly for selectively positioning a transducer over each data storage surface of the storage medium for reading and writing of information stored on the medium. The method and apparatus control rotation of the spindle motor by providing a voltage waveform to each winding at selected switching times during each rotation such that switching does not occur while the head is positioned over data. In a first embodiment, switching during nondata regions is assured by setting the switch points to coincide in time with a fixed data storage surface format. Alternatively, the data storage surface is written with servo sectors to coincide in time with preselected switch points. In a third embodiment, the time for switching is advanced or delayed until the transducer is located over a nondata region near to the nominal switching point by providing a processor executing control code and a delay circuit for delaying switching from a zero-crossing in the spindle motor control circuit. Optional enhancements are also presented.

    • A lens holder is provided with objective lenses of different types. Rotating the lens holder causes one of the objective lenses to be placed in the optical path of the laser beam. Near one objective lens, there is provided a reflecting element that reflects part of the laser beam directed to the objective lens. When the objective lens is put in the optical path, the beam from the reflecting element is sensed by a sensor. From the sensing result, it is judged that a specific type of objective lens is in the optical path. Accordingly, there is provided an objective lens driving apparatus that includes at least two objective lenses with different numerical apertures according to optical information recording mediums complying with different standards, is capable of switching between the objective lenses according to the optical information recording medium to be used, and further has a simple structure capable of identifying the type of the objective lens selected by switching.

    • A floppy disk drive is disclosed which is for use with a host system capable of connecting its own power supply to the disk drive when its operation is needed, and disconnecting the power supply from the disk drive when its operation is not needed. The disk drive includes a stepper motor for moving a data transducer from track to track on a rotating magnetic disk, and a track counter for ascertaining the radial position of the transducer on the disk by counting the stepping pulses fed from the host system to a stepper motor control circuit. In order to maintain the count of the track counter despite power suspension, the track counter is connected to a supply terminal of the disk drive via a reverse blocking diode, and a capacitor is connected between the diode and ground. The track counter is therefore fed from the capacitor when the disk drive is disconnected from the power supply of the host system. Preferably, the count of the track counter when the disk drive is disconnected from the power supply may be temporarily stored on an electrically erasable, programmable read only memory, and the stored count may be returned to and preset on the track counter when the disk drive is subsequently powered on.
