    • In an acoustic well logging apparatus including one or two transmitters and having a pair of spaced apart receivers, two interval transit times are measured independently through a common zone of interest. The two independent measured values are then compared and the difference is then used in contrast with a threshold determinant based on the period of the transmitted pulses. This comparison shows a difference. If the threshold value is not exceeded by the difference value a quality indication is then obtained suggesting that the acoustic measurements did not suffer from cycle skipping. If the threshold value is exceeded by the difference value, then a possible cycle skip exists. If testing shows that a cycle skip does exist, then the error that it introduces is removed from the final log, and a quality indication is obtained suggesting that the answer is good and that a cycle skip error has been removed.

    • A method for producing a display of acoustic signals received during full waveform acoustic well logging. In a preferred embodiment, the signals received at the individual receiver (or receivers) of the logging tool are stacked along lines of constant acoustic velocity to produce for display a stacked signal. Preferably, the raw signals are weighted prior to the stacking step, to compensate for decreasing amplitude of the acoustic arrival of interest with increasing transmitter to receiver distance. The stacked signals produced may be displayed in various formats, such as on a linear or logarithmic scale of inverse acoustic velocity, or of formation porosity. In a preferred embodiment, resulting in production for display of stacked signals providing greater resolution in the direction of the borehole axis, pairwise stacked signals are produced from data received at adjacent receivers, and after two or more acoustic transmitter firings at distinct positions in the borehole, the pairwise stacked signals associated with common depth intervals are added together and the resulting common depth stacks for each depth interval are displayed. The method makes full use of the entire wavetrain of the individual receiver signals processed in accordance therewith, and is sufficiently efficient to facilitate processing and display of acoustic logging data at the well site.

    • A well logging method and apparatus for detecting the first arrival of an acoustic wave in a logging signal under adverse signal conditions. The received acoustic signal is amplified at a fixed gain until clipped at the largest amplitude throughout the logging procedure. This amplified signal is converted RMS to DC level signal and stored in sample and hold means for a period shortly before first arrival of the acoustic wave. The continuing DC level signal and the stored DC level signal are compared to produce a comparator output DC signal when the continuing DC signal has a certain increased magnitude. This certain increased magnitude is used to generate a pulse of given magnitude and duration that is especially suitable in digital data systems.

    • In accordance with illustrative embodiments of the present invention, techniques are disclosed for compensating acoustic well logging measurements for variations in one or more conditions of a well bore. More particularly, these measurements are compensated for variations in well bore cross-section, and well bore fluid acoustic impedance and velocity. These compensation techniques have particular significance in connection with systems of the type which scan a well bore wall by rotating a transducer means which emits directional bursts of high frequency acoustic energy and receives energy reflected off the bore wall. The electrical signals produced by this received energy are suitably processed to provide information relative to the character of the media forming the well bore wall.
