    • A device for generating fluid micro streams comprises a body portion with a fluid supply cavity therein and a plurality of fluid micro channels interconnecting the fluid supply cavity with an external outlet face of the body portion, the body portion being formed from a plurality of stacked plates, said micro channels being formed at interfaces of at least certain of said stacked plates. The micro channels have an oblong cross-sectional profile over a certain section leading to the outlet face, with a major width that is greater than two times a minor width thereof, where the minor width is less than 200 um. The device can be used in apparatus for freezing of food, cooling a gas or inducing a chemical reaction between a liquid and a gas.

    • A device and method for freezing or cooling of food or other items using cryogenic and low temperature coolants is provided. The device includes a coolant container which contains the cryogenic or low temperature coolant. The device will also include a freezing compartment with a lower surface which is immediately adjacent to the coolant container. The coolant container includes a valve for controlling the pressure within the coolant container, and thereby control the temperature of the coolant. When the materials to be cooled are placed in the freezing compartment the coolant will absorb heat from the materials via the lower surface and some of the coolant will vaporize. In a preferred embodiment the device includes a system for collecting the vapors thus created.

    • A turbulence inducing fan blows cold gaseous nitrogen through ducts disposed to either side of a conveyor carrying product to be frozen through a freezing tunnel. The cold gaseous nitrogen is deflected downwardly onto product on the conveyor by a baffle having, in cross section, the form of a cusp. The cold gaseous nitrogen forms two counter-rotating vortex. The cold gaseous nitrogen travels across the product and then passes into an intake cowl primarily via inlets disposed adjacent both edges of the conveyor. The intake cowl collects the cold gaseous nitrogen which is sucked into the intake of the turbulence inducing fan. This arrangement provides excellent heat transfer to the product being frozen.

    • A cooling system, a cooling method utilizing the inventive cooling system, and a chicken product formed using the inventive method. The inventive cooling system comprises: (a) a tunnel-type cooler housing; (b) a first treatment zone provided in the housing for treating articles by injecting carbon dioxide into the first treatment zone toward the articles and by circulating carbon dioxide in the first treatment zone; (c) a second treatment zone provided in the housing for further treating the articles by injecting carbon dioxide into the second treatment zone toward the articles and by circulating carbon dioxide in the second treatment zone; and (d) a conveyor assembly for conveying the articles through the first and second treatment zones. The carbon dioxide injected into the second treatment zone impinges on the articles to a greater degree than does the carbon dioxide injected into the first treatment zone. Further, the circulation of carbon dioxide in the first and second treatment zones is conducted in a manner such that a greater degree of turbulence is created in the second treatment zone than is created in the first treatment zone.

    • A tunnel freezer uses carbon dioxide snow to directly contact product carried on a conveyor belt passing through the freezer. Fans are provided above and below the upper conveyor belt run carrying the product, with the fans above and below having downwardly directed exhaust. Trough-shaped deflector plates are provided adjacent the lower fans to circulate a flow adjacent the underneath surface of the upper conveyor belt run. Preferably, circulation adjacent the upper conveyor belt run is generally parallel to the upper conveyor belt run, and turning vanes are provided to deflect the flow upwardly through the upper conveyor belt run. Freezers may be provided with one or more cooling zones arranged in series along the path of conveyor belt travel.
