    • A solar energy collector comprises a solid body having a substantially planar solar energy absorbing collecting surface. The solid body has a first thickness at a center portion tapering to a second thickness at each of a pair opposing edge portions defining a width of the body. A bore extends completely through the body along its length and is aligned along an axis at the center portion. A window transparent at most solar radiation in the visible spectrum and near UV to infrared-red solar energy wavelengths is disposed at a distance from the collecting surface, the window sealed around a periphery of the collecting surface to define a sealed air gap or nitrogen gas filled gap between the collecting surface and the bottom surface of the window. The solar energy collector is a major component of a solar water heating system.

    • The present application relates to a vacuum solar thermal panel (1) of the type comprising: a vacuum-tight envelope (10), having at least a front plate (11) transparent to solar radiation and a support structure (12) for said front plate (11); heat-absorbing means enclosed within said vacuum-tight envelope (10); and main getter means for keeping a vacuum condition within the vacuum envelope (10); wherein the vacuum solar thermal panel (1) further comprises a pressure indicator spot (13) of reactive material deposited on an inner side of said front plate (11), said reactive material undergoing a reaction noticeable from the outside of the vacuum-tight envelope (11) when the pressure within said envelope exceeds a given threshold.

    • An evacuated tube solar thermal collector uses a set of evacuated solar thermal collector tubes in heat exchanging contact with a fluid flowing through a header tube. Two heat pipes are provided in each evacuated thermal collector tube, and the condenser ends of the heat pipes are positioned in the header tube with a spacing that provides improved heat transfer from the heat pipes to the header tube. When 14 mm heat pipes contained in 58 mm collector tubes are used in a header tube having a capacity of about 0.5 gallons with a heat transfer liquid that is flowing at a rate of about 0.3 gpm, the spacing between heat pipes in each collector tube is about 24 mm, center to center, and the spacing between corresponding heat pipes of immediately-adjacent collector tubes is about 80 mm.
