    • In one example, a portion of a transmission includes first and second sheave halves disposed on a shaft, one of which is movable along the shaft relative to the other sheave half. Three moon gears are disposed on a rotatable shaft attached to a first sled that moves along a slot defined in a sheave halve. An input shaft with a control gear is connected to the sheave halves. Three threaded shafts are provided, that each include a worm gear. The worm gear engages an index gear of a respective rotatable shaft on which a respective one of the moon gears is mounted, and each threaded shaft including a threaded shaft drive gear that engages the control gear. A shift controller is coupled to the input shaft and threaded shaft drive gears, and creates a difference in rotational speed between the input shaft and the threaded shaft drive gear.

    • A pulley apparatus of a belt drive comprises a first and a second pulleys and a belt bearing. A first pulley is fixed coaxial to the power shaft and has a first pitch setting device. A second pulley is coaxially rotatable relative to the first and has a second pitch setting device. A belt bearing maintains a gross bearing surface to bear the belt at a pitch by a cooperation with the two pitch setting devices. Transmission of power loads the pulley apparatus wherein the two pulleys and the belt bearing all rotate together in the same direction at the same speed while the second pulley is induced by the loading to rotate relative to the first in the opposite direction. The load-induced relative rotation increases the pitch by adjustment in the cooperation until a fixed length of the belt allows no further relative movement between the two pulleys. Belt tension due to transmission of the load induces increased belt pressure onto the belt bearing to prevent belt slip in the pulley apparatus for sustained power transmission.

    • A belt drive system employs variable diameter drive and driven pulleys interconnected by a flat belt and operative to vary the rotational speed of the driven pulley as in a variable speed transmission. Each pulley includes an internal fluid pressure chamber and diametrically aligned pairs of radially movable pistons or lift bars that support transverse lift rods at their outer ends. Axially spaced circular guide plates form end boundaries for the fluid pressure chamber and have radial through-slots that cooperate with arcuate slots in juxtaposed pairs of coaxial guide discs to receive opposite ends of the lift rods and effect synchronous radial movement of the lift rods in response to pressure changes within the fluid pressure chamber. An elongated flexible spring-like support member is attached at one end to a lift rod and extends in supported relation circumferentially over and about the lift rods to define a variable diameter belt support surface. The diametrically aligned pistons are adapted for telescoping relation during radial inward movement of the lift rods, thereby enabling greater variance in the diameter of the belt support surface for a given size pulley. Electronic sensors sense the rotational position of each pulley during rotation and cooperate with a source of fluid pressure to maintain the desired pulley diameter and belt tension.

When the driving elements mesh with the guiding sections and slide in the guide rails and the passages respectively provided on the first and the second set of joint disks, a winding radius of the transmission element wound around the driving elements is automatically changed.

    • A chain drive transmission has a variable diameter sprocket. The sprocket has a number of sectors which can be moved radially relative to a hub of the sprocket. The sectors are biased outwardly but can be pulled inwardly by flexible members which wind around a spool. The spool is, in turn connected to an axially movable shifting member. The gear ratio of the transmission can be changed by either allowing the shifting member to move axially outwardly, in which case the effective diameter of the variable diameter sprocket increases, or by momentarily braking rotation of the shifting member, in which case the flexible members are wound onto the spool thereby reducing the effective diameter of the variable sprocket. Shifting between gear ratios may be done with a simple rugged mechanism. Shifting between gear ratios requires little force and can be controlled with an electromechanical actuator. Both driving and driven sprockets in a power transmission may be variable diameter sprockets.

    • A self adjusting tensioning system for a variable transmission. An endless belt is advanced by and supported on a pair of spaced apart, variable diameter, sheaves which are independently movable between reduced and enlarged configurations and which result in the belt assuming different paths. A pair of rollers are rotatably mounted at fixedly spaced locations on an elongated carrier member. One of the rollers is actively biased into engagement with the belt by a compression spring assembly. A cam surface on the carrier member proximate the other of the rollers is slidable along a fixed contoured supporting surface and passively assures engagement of the other of the rollers with the belt. As the ratio of the transmission changes with changed diameters of the sheaves and the belt thereby assumes a changed path, the belt is effective to automatically move the rollers therealong so as to maintain a substantially constant tension in the belt. A stabilizer mechanism inhibits undesirable rotational movement of the carrier member about its longitudinal axis.
