    • This relates to a dancer roll assembly wherein there are a pair of dancer roll assemblies disposed in side-by-side relation and each vertically disposed. Each dancer roll assembly includes an upper shaft and a lower shaft having spaced sprockets thereon which are vertically aligned and over which are engaged belts. Each pair of belts carries a dancer doll for vertical movement under the influence of a tensioned web passed around the dancer roll. The upper shaft is a control shaft and has connected thereto a pneumatic control motor which resists the rotation of the shaft and thus resists the upward movement of the dancer roll. After the dancer roll has moved to an uppermost permitted position, the pneumatic motor is actuated to rotate the upper shaft and thus return the dancer roll to its lowermost starting position. The tension on the web is controlled by controlling the air pressure to the air motor.

    • A machine for interrupting a portion of an otherwise continuously moving web of material to enable one or more manufacturing operations to be performed on the stopped portion of the web while the remaining portions of the web are advanced continuously. The machine is interposed between a pair of other machines in a production line in which one of the machines continuously feeds the web to the interrupting machine and the other machine continuously draws the web from the interrupting machine. The interrupting machine includes means to take up the web fed continuously to the interrupting machine as well as means for storing and paying out a length of web from the outlet end of the machine. The web is advanced and stopped in precisely controlled incremental lengths to insure proper registration of the stopped portion of the web with the manufacturing instrumentalities mounted on the interrupting machine.

    • Apparatus for intermittently feeding lengths of continuous sheet material moving at a constant velocity includes a metering roll rotating at a constant speed to accept the material, a feed roll intermittently engaging and disengaging the material and reciprocating brake means for stopping the movement of the material during each disengagement thereof by the feed roll are provided to intermittently feed given lengths of material. The feed roll and brake means are reciprocated through the use of a multiple cam system and the brake means is designed to exert a high brake force on the sheet material without distorting the normal path of movement of the material. A looper roll is located along the material length between the metering roll and the feed roll. Means are provided for cyclically moving the looper roll to compensate for material buildup which occurs during engagement of the material by the brake. The moving means comprises means for oscillating a first member which is connected by means of a pivotal joint to an elongated second member which in turn is connected to the looper roll. The first member consists of a first part and a second part. Means for adjusting the position of the second part relative to the first part are provided such that the distance between the oscillating means and the pivotal joint may be varied to vary the path of movement of the roll, thereby permitting the apparatus to be adjusted to intermittently feed different lengths of material.

    • One embodiment of the invention pertains to an automatic and precision guiding procedure and apparatus for thin narrow moving steel strip as the strip is collected in a looping or storage device made up of four rolls. One end of each of the rolls is rotatably supported in a stationary frame, while the opposite ends of the rolls are rotatably supported in an orbital mounted frame, the axes of rotation of the rolls being equal distance from the axis of rotation of the rotatable frame. Much activity in recent years has centered on developing and perfecting a means and method for automatically guiding moving material such as rolled steel strip, incident to the processing of the strip; for example, during its rolling, pickling, annealing, or plating. One of these activities has become generally known as the Lorig self-centering system for strip-like material, which system is covered by a number of U.S. patents, three exemplary ones being U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,593,157, 2,593,158, and 2,706,625. While such guiding systems have found employment they have not replaced the more conventional guiding procedure of employing edge engaging means for the moving strip. One of the reasons for the continuance of employment of edge guiding means is the additional cost involved in employing the automatic guiding means, even though such means offer the advantage of avoiding the strip physically coming into contact with the rigid edge guiding members of the conventional procedure.
