    • A die structure for use in a tool which crimps or cuts a workpiece between relatively moveable jaws of the tool on which the die structure is securable is particularly structured for durability when used to severe high tensile strength cable such as guy wire and other multi-strand cable. A pair of die structures in accordance with the invention each has a cutting edge formed on a die body, and in a preferred embodiment, the cutting edges have aligned engagement surfaces which are flat and elongate to provide a pinching action which fractures or severs the workpiece usually before the cutting surfaces meet. The flat cutting surfaces provide improved durability over sharp cutting edges, and are preferably heat treated to promote further durability in severe cutting surface. The die structure, installed preferably on the stationary tool jaw, also includes retaining structure secured on the die body adjacently spaced from the cutting edge and arranged to support the workpiece engageable thereagainst to prevent deformation or splaying of the workpiece at the supported position during severance by the cutting edge at adjacent location on the workpiece. In a preferred embodiment, the retaining structure includes a pair of spaced support walls laterally arranged on the die body relative to an intermediate position of the cutting edge. In another embodiment, one of the die bodies has a half-cylindrical cavity for reception of a workpiece, and is not provided with an impinging or cutting edge so that the diametrically opposed cylindrical cavity walls provide lateral support particularly of a multi-strand cable which prevent or minimize splaying thereof during impingement by a single cutting edge which projects, preferably an arcuate configuration, from the other die body.

    • A forming apparatus for forming a selected profile in a sheet of material includes a frame, a sheet drive to advance the sheet of material through the frame, a drive assembly for powering the sheet drive, forming rollers to configure the sheet into the desired profile and a shear assembly to cut the formed sheet into desired lengths. The sheet drive includes pairs of coacting rollers with each pair comprising a driven roller connected to the drive assembly and a free-wheeling roller that is adjustably mounted relative to its associated driven roller. The shear assembly has a housing that movably mounts a pair of opposed blade mounts that have facing channels which receive lateral edges of a blade. These channels are wider than the blade thickness so that the blade freely floats and is thus self-aligning between dies. The blade has a cutting edge configured to always attack the formed sheet at a rake angle of at least five degrees so that all cutting of the formed sheet is by a scissor action as opposed to a chop cut.

    • A portable, power-driven machine for cutting a threaded rod to any required length by the shearing action of a movable cutting bit thrust past a fixed cutting bit. Each cutting bit has a series of semicircular internal threads for mating engagement with the threaded rod, and a cutting face disposed perpendicular to the axis of the internal threads. A depression with a depth less than the thread pitch is formed in the cutting face of the fixed cutting bit. When the threaded rod is sheared, to one rod section is partly received in the depression at the end of the cutting stroke of the movable cutting bit, in order to prevent the jamming engagement of the movable cutting bit with the rod section through their mating threads. A similar depression is formed in the cutting face of the movable cutting bit in an alternate embodiment of the invention.

    • A method and apparatus for shearing logs to form billets includes movable stop at the discharge side of a shear to measure the length of the log passed through the shear. A light beam impinges on a detector when the trailing end of a log passes beyond the light beam to produce a signal concurrently with a signal which is produced by displacement of the movable stop. The concurrent production of these two signals is used to produce a third signal corresponding to a measure of the length of the log. The latter signal is used for determining the sheared length of one or part of a two-piece billet that can be produced from the log-end portion. The log is severed by displacing a movable upper die of the shear beyond a stationary lower die. In one embodiment, a gripper engages and pulls the end of the log from the shear. In a second embodiment, an H-shaped frame extending outwardly at the discharge side of the shear carries a movable stop. In both embodiments, the gripper or movable stop is carried on a movable block that can be moved back and forth along guide rods that are supported by the shear.
