    • A database that can store static and dynamic entries, wherein a static entry contains conventional static data, and a dynamic entry contains information specifying dynamic behavior to control devices on a network. In this database, the act of storing a dynamic entry in the database triggers control over devices on the network. More specifically, one embodiment of a database system according to the present invention includes a data storage medium for storing entries as well as an indexing structure for locating entries on the data storage medium. It also includes a storage mechanism for performing operations to store entries on the data storage medium. Encoded on the data storage medium are dynamic entries containing descriptions of dynamic behavior for the devices on the network. The database additionally includes an execution mechanism that, in response to a dynamic entry being stored on the data storage medium, commands the devices on the network to perform the dynamic behavior specified in the dynamic entry. In a variation on the above embodiment, the execution mechanism is configured to periodically monitor and control the devices on the network.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for remotely managing network elements in a distributed computing system. The distributed computing system utilizes a software entity, such as an operating system, to manage the location of, and communication with, distributed resources in the distributed computing system. A network manager and/or SNMP agents can interact with distributed elements to obtain desired management information independent of the location of the distributed elements. Thus, master agents can communicate with managed network nodes without adhering to the intricate requirements of the SMUX or DPI protocols. SNMP MIBs are implemented as hierarchical file systems, comprised of a tree of file-like objects, that may be accessed through a namespace. The SNMP MIB namespace allows the network manager, master agent and SNMP agents to access each resource, including SNMP MIBs, in a uniform, file-oriented manner. The SNMP MIB namespace of each network node managed by a master agent can be mounted into the namespace of the master agent to create a distributed MIB namespace. The MIB of each managed node is mounted to the MIB namespace of the master agent and appropriate connections through the distributed network are established by the operating system or another software entity.

    • This invention relates to managing multiple web servers, and more particularly to a web service system and method that allows a system operator to distribute content to each web server in the web service system. In one embodiment, a method for replicating changes in a source file set on a destination file system includes identifying changes in a source file set, storing the identified changes in a modification list, and transmitting the modification list to an agent having access to a destination file system.     • One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates fast network management protocol replies in large tables. The system operates by first receiving a request for a next row from a network management protocol table. The system then compares the object identifier in the request with a pre-calculated object identifier. If the object identifier matches the pre-calculated object identifier, the system responds to the request with a pre-calculated response. If the object identifier does not match the pre-calculated object identifier, the system searches a management information base for the next row in the network management protocol table. Next, the system calculates a response, which includes data from requested columns of the next row. The system then responds to the request.
