    • A waveguide structure including two parallels electrically conducting ground planes (1,2), each of which includes at least one row of spaced apart electrically conducting posts (3). The rows of posts are arranged substantially parallel to one another and the space bounded by the plates and posts defines a guided wave region (4) along which electromagnetic radiation may propagate. The posts are connected to only one of the planes so that there is no physical connection between the two ground planes (1,2). Actuating means may be connected to one or both of the ground planes to cause relative movement there between to thereby alter the electrical response of the waveguide. The direction of the relative movement may such that the distance between the rows of posts (3) is changed and/or the distance between the ground planes (1,2) is changed. Various device may utilize the described waveguide construction, including reconfigurable waveguide filters and antenna structures e.g. slotted waveguide arrays.

    • A phase scan antenna suitable for millimeter wave radar applications is pided comprising a four-sided ferrite rod having a series of electromagnetic energy emitting slots along one side of the rod. The remaining three rod sides are enclosed by a metal, channel-shaped member which is spaced from the rod by a plastic, channel-shaped substrate member, so that energy emitted from the rod side which is opposite from the slotted rod side will be reflected to pass out the slotted rod side, to thereby enhance the antenna beam produced by the slotted rod side. A magnetic biasing coil having serially-interconnected coil portions is helically wound about the metal channel-shaped member with the coil portions disposed between the slots in the first rod side to cause scanning of the antenna beam. The ferrite rod may be end fed by either dielectric waveguide sections or hollow, metallic waveguide sections.

    • A slotted-waveguide linear array in which a pattern of slots in a narrow wall of a first waveguide forms the aperture of the array. A second waveguide runs parallel to the first guide, the other narrow wall of the first waveguide being a common wall with the second waveguide. The pattern of coupling holes through this common wall couples energy between the waveguides.A feed arrangement, preferably including a 180.degree. hybrid, has two of its ports connected one each to the first and second waveguides, the difference port, when driven, providing 180.degree. phase feed of the two waveguides so that the presence of the second waveguide is substantially nil. Thus, a single beam is formed as if the second waveguide were not present. The feed also provides for excitation of the waveguides through a mutual hybrid in-phase relationship when the sum port of the hybrid is driven, in which case the beam is angularly separated from the original beam.
