    • In a method for forming a micromechanical device, a force associated with operation of the device is varied between locations spaced across a conductive element of the device. The method may be used to form a switch adapted such that a force associated with actuation of the switch varies between locations spaced across a contact element of the switch. The varied force may include a required closing force for the switch, an applied force during actuation of the switch, a restoring force tending to open the switch, and/or a sticking force tending to keep the switch closed. A variable-valued circuit element having a conductive element and conductive pad may also be formed, adapted such that a fraction of the conductive element which is moved to the proximity of the conductive pad is variable depending on a total magnitude of a force applied.

    • The invention relates to a microswitch containing conductors located on a first level and conductors located on a second level, where the conductors on the first level are supported by a deformable element which can switch by means of an actuator with a bimetallic effect, and where the effect of this switching is that the gap between the conductors on the first level and the conductors on the second level is modified, characterised in that the actuator with a bimetallic effect consists of resistors in close and localised contact with the deformable element, and in that the resistors are capable, when traversed by an electric control current, of expanding sufficiently under the effect of the heat produced by the passage of the electric command current to cause, by the bimetallic effect, the deformable element to trigger before the heat produced in the resistors has been able to propagate into the deformable element.

    • A trimmable microminiature force-sensitive switching device for detecting the state of external conditions, such as pressure, acceleration and temperature, is disclosed. The device includes a silicon substrate having a reduced-thickness, deflectable member adapted to change its deflection in response to changes in the external condition to be detected. Increasing deflection of the member establishes electrical contact between a common contact and first one, then progressively more, spaced electrical contacts of a plurality of switches. Each of the spaced electrical contacts is connected to a common terminal. Trimming of the switching device is accomplished by application of a preselected external force, such as pressure, that causes the deflection of the deflectable member and the closing of one or more of the switches. Electrical energy is then applied to the external terminal of the common contact and the external terminal of the common terminal of the fusible links, such that current flows through the switches that have closed and through their associated fusible links, causing those fusible links to open circuit, thereby precluding the subsequent detection of external conditions whose level is at or below the preselected level applied during trimming of the device.
