    • Generating a musical composition from one or more portions of one or more performances of one or more musical compositions included in a database is disclosed. The method and system include selecting a portion of a pre-recorded composition based on a degree of similarity with the component of the composition that is input; portions that are musically similar but not musically the same as the component may be selected for addition to the composition. The degree of similarity may be based on a ChordScore and/or a ScaleScore of the retrieved portion of the pre-recorded compositions. A ChordScore is generated by comparing chord tones of one or more chords in the pre-recorded portion with chord tones of the input component. A ScaleScore is generated by comparing tones of one or more notes in the pre-recorded portion with tones in a harmonic scale associated with the input component's chords.

    • A graphical user interface for facilitating generation of an accompaniment for a recorded audio melody is described. A Hidden Markov Model, trained with blended chord transition matrices and melody observation matrices, is used for providing the accompaniment for the recorded audio melody. The recorded audio melody includes segments. Frequency analysis of the recorded audio melody is performed. The total duration of each fundamental frequency within a segment of the melody is summed. Based on the summing, a probability for each possible chord for each segment is computed. Based on the computed probabilities, a set of chords are selected for the segments. The chords are displayed on a chord chart of the graphical user interface. The graphical user interface facilitates various manipulations using the chords and/or controls, and generation of a new accompaniment for a recorded audio melody based on the manipulations.

    • A new type of Markovian sequence generator and generation method generates a Markovian sequence having controllable properties, notably properties that satisfy at least one control criterion which is a computable requirement holding on items in the sequence. The Markovian sequence is generated chunkwise, each chunk containing a plurality of items in the sequence. During generation of each chunk a search is performed in the space of Markovian sequences to find a chunk-sized series of items which enables the control criterion to be satisfied. The search can be performed using a generate and test approach in which chunk-sized Markovian sequences are generated then tested for compliance with the requirement(s) of the control criteria. Alternatively, the search can be performed by formulating the sequence-generation task as a constraint satisfaction problem, with one or more constraints ensuring that the generated sequence is Markovian and one or more constraints enforcing the requirement(s) of the control criteria. The sequence generator can be used in an interactive system where a user specifies the control criterion via an inputting device (20).
