    • In order to offer a printer capable of high throughput printing even when the same printing or printing that is partially different is repeated, the printing apparatus of present invention equipped with a storage unit for storing print image data based on print data received from the host device in a designated position and a printing controller and printer engine that performs print processing on the recording medium based on the print image data stored in the storage unit in accordance with control data received from the host device. Specifically, this printing apparatus features an erasure unit for selectively deleting print image data that has undergone the print processing from the storage unit in accordance with control data received from the host device. Also, the printing controller is preferably configured such that it performs the print processing in accordance with first and second types of control data, such that the erasure unit performs erasure processing in accordance with the first control data and does not perform erasure processing in accordance with the second control data.

    • An improved printer is provided that uses a hard disk drive resident in the printer to temporarily store some of the page data of print jobs received by this printer. Since disk access time is relatively slow as compared to access time of random access memory (RAM), only a minimal amount of pages are initially stored on the hard disk drive while the remaining pages of a print job continue to be stored in RAM, such that the pages on the hard disk drive are interleaved with those stored in RAM. Once the pages are stored on the hard disk drive, some of the areas of RAM where they previously resided are released, which allows the printer to free up some of its RAM. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, only every fourth page is initially stored on the hard disk drive, which effectively spreads out the effects of the slower disk access time across several pages as they are printed. The page data that is stored on the hard disk drive will be divided into tiled "blocks" of print data, so that the individual blocks can be stored in non-contiguous locations within the printer's main memory system of RAM, and later stored on the hard disk drive. If a page of data is to be stored on the hard disk drive, some "empty" space in RAM large enough to hold all of the blocks of data that are being stored on the hard disk drive for this page is reserved in RAM, so that later the blocks that have been stored on the hard disk drive can be retrieved from that drive and will have an immediate place to go in the printer's RAM, which allows the printer to maintain its overall rated printing speed in more situations. These "empty" locations that have been reserved in RAM and known as "shared memory tables," and will contain enough memory locations in the printer's main RAM system to hold all of the compressed bitmap data for all of the blocks for a particular page, or for the "largest" page (in terms of compressed bitmap data) of several pages. If the printer's RAM becomes so scarce that, even after all pages of bitmap data are stored on the disk, the printer still calls for more RAM to be freed, then two or more shared memory tables can be combined with one another in an attempt to make more RAM available to meet the printer's request for more free RAM.

    • While eliminating the need for a dedicated on-line selector switch, a printing apparatus and control method is provided to improve the processes required to replenish consumable printing materials consumed during the printing operation. Using a transport mechanism for transporting the print medium and a printing mechanism for printing to the print medium, the printing apparatus accomplishes the printing process based on data received from a host device, selectively switches between an on-line state and an off-line state and notifies the host device of the currently selected state. The printing apparatus further comprises sensors for detecting the presence of consumable products, including roll paper and ink, that are consumed by the printing process, a switch with two functional settings, and a control device. The two functional settings of the switch are an on-line function commanding a transition from the off-line state to the on-line state, and a second function for specifying the process, such as a paper feed operation, to be executed by the printing apparatus when consumable materials are replenished. The control device causes the printing apparatus to shift to the off-line state when a sensor detects that a particular consumable material is not present, and selects the on-line function of the switch when a sensor detects after switching to the off-line state that a particular consumable material is again present and available for printing.

    • A multiple print engine system includes a plurality of print engine modules (10) that are arranged in a parallel configuration. Each of the print engine modules (PEMs) is a dedicated print engine having an associated photoconductor drum (44) and a transfer drum (42). Paper is pulled from an associated paper bin (78) or (80) and passed through the transfer nip (46) between the two drums (44) and (42). The printed copy, either made by a monochrome process or a multipass color process, is then passed through a fuser (74) to a print buffer (16) which has an associated print buffer path (104). The paper is maintained in the print buffer until it is selected by the output combiner (20). The output combiner (20) extracts the paper from the print buffer (16) at a faster rate than it was processed by the associated one of the print engines (10). The images are distributed to the various print engines by an image distributor (30) which determines which image is associated with which engine. A print manager (32) determines which of the copies in the print buffers (16) are output to the output combiner (20) and, subsequently, to an output bin.
