    • This invention relates to a chain conveyor wherein the tension of the chain or chains thereof is controlled by a closed-loop servo system. The servo-system includes an electrically-operable servo-device. An electrical signal dependent on the torque of an electric motor driving the conveyor is applied to the servo-device for operation thereof to control a piston-and-cylinder device which is adapted to alter the distance between a chain-driving sprocket and another sprocket of the conveyor. The arrangement controls the tension of the or each chain at the point where the chain is just leaving the circumference of the first-mentioned sprocket, maintaining the tension at a constant value which may be near to zero under all conditions of operation.

    • A method of winding a sheet into a roll by the center drive system, comprising the step of detecting a winding tension, the step of calculating the detected value by comparison with a desired tensile value conditioned by a dimension of the winding roll as based on a winding length growing with the progress of the winding, and the step of controlling the winding tension by the compared and calculated value. The tensile control adopts a theoretical equation in which the winding length is a variable and for which certain conditions are taken into consideration. The detected winding tension is compared with the preset appropriate tensile value, and is calculated in an analog or digital system so as to control a winding torque. The tensile control is accomplished by a torque actuator which is coupled to a winding axis.

    • A web tension control system in which the dancer roll shaft mounting block is slidably supported on a rod which extends between a pair of machine frame members and which is formed with a piston head intermediate its ends for cooperation with a cylinder secured to the shaft mounting block for movement therewith. Air under pressure supplied to the interior of the cylinder at one side of the piston head through an axial bore in the rod and an opening in the head normally urges the cylinder and dancer roll against the web tension to a position corresponding to the desired tension. Movement of the dancer roll mounting block and cylinder from the desired position in response to a change in the web tension is sensed to provide a control signal which is employed to restore the web tension to the desired value.

    • Constant line tension can be maintained in a ship''s mooring or towing line extending from a winch by supplying to a polyphase phase-wound induction motor driving the winch alternating current from an alternating-current source the frequency of which is variable in response to the load on the winch. Such variablefrequency source may be an alternator driven by a phase-wound induction machine powered to operate as a motor. The variablefrequency AC source is connected to the winch motor to drive the winch only in the reeling-in direction, but the tension on the line can retard the motor speed or stall the motor or rotate the winch and motor in the opposite, paying-out direction against the reeling-in driving torque of the motor. The winch motor torque can be adjusted by varying the value of resistance shunted across the rotor winding of the winch motor. The line can be retrieved very quickly by having a squirrel-cage alternating-current motor connected mechanically to the phase-wound induction machine. During constant-line-tension operation, such motor is simply idly rotated with such machine, but for rapid line retrieval the motor can be powered by the same AC supply as powers the phase-wound induction machine and such motor will then drive the phase-wound induction machine positively. The winch-motor torque can be adjusted by varying the value of resistance shunted across the rotor winding of the winch motor. Also, for towing applications the voltage of the variable-frequency source can be altered in response to variations in the length of line paid out or reeled in to control the winch motor in turn in response to sensing the extent of rotation of the winch drum in paying out or reeling in the towing line and correspondingly varying the field excitation of the alternating-current generator supplying current to the winch motor to operate the winch motor for restoring the line to its original length.
