    • Embodiments include a system and method for determining the temperature of the liquid crystal layer of a liquid crystal display. Because LCD performance is dependant on the temperature of the liquid crystal layer, performing particularly poorly in colder temperatures many LCD's are available with integral heaters. Determining the temperature of the liquid crystal layer of an LCD is imperative for appropriate thermal management, which in turn leads to more-optimal LCD lifetime. Exemplary embodiments relate to accurately determining the temperature of the liquid crystal layer of an LCD by employing the integrated heater layer as a temperature sensor. When the relationship between the temperature of the integral heater is known, and the integral heater is disposed very near the liquid crystal layer, then determining the resistance of the metal heater layer, allows for rapid, accurate determination of the average temperature of the liquid crystal layer, and correspondingly better thermal management.

    • A liquid crystal display contains a light source, a light guide panel that directs light from the light source towards a display panel, and optical sheets containing a diffusion sheet that spreads the light from the light guide panel and at least one prism sheet that redirects light from the diffusion sheet in a direction substantially perpendicular to the display panel. The optical sheets contain a region adjacent to the light source that has a hardened part that substantially prevents heat from being transferred to a display region of the optical sheet corresponding to the display region of the display panel and minimizes the temperature difference across the display region. The hardened part is formed on at least opposing sides of the optical sheets, overlaps a non-display region of the display panel and is bent or contains a convex part that projects towards the display panel.

    • A display device for a vehicle includes a liquid crystal display (LCD), a panel heater, and a display control circuit. The LCD has a LCD panel and the panel heater is attached to a front of the LCD panel. The display control circuit detects the current time and determines whether the current time is five minutes ahead of a scheduled start time stored in a memory. If so, the display control circuit starts driving the panel heater for warming up the LCD to a proper temperature for providing clear images by the scheduled start time.
