Alignment aids formed from a common hard mask on the planar waveguide layer of the interposer structure include vertical and lateral alignment structures and fiducials. Optical losses for signals propagating in interposer-based photonic integrated circuits are reduced with effective alignment structures and methods.

摘要： A first chip includes a first plurality of optical waveguides exposed at a facet of the first chip. A second chip includes a second plurality of optical waveguides exposed at a facet of the second chip. The second chip includes first and second spacers on opposite sides of the second plurality of optical waveguides. The first and second spacers have respective alignment surfaces oriented substantially parallel to the facet of the second chip at a controlled perpendicular distance away from the facet of the second chip. The second chip is positioned with the alignment surfaces of the first and second spacers contacting the facet of the first chip, and with the second plurality of optical waveguides respectively aligned with the first plurality of optical waveguides. The first and second spacers define and maintain an air gap of at least micrometer-level precision between the first and second pluralities of optical waveguides.

摘要： A first optical axis of a first optical component is caused to be at a first angle with respect to a first precision surface of the first optical component. A second optical axis of a second optical component is aligned to be at a second angle to a second flat surface of the second optical component. The second angle is equal to or derived from the first angle. The first and second flat surfaces are caused to directly face each other to allow only sliding motion between the first and second flat surfaces. The sliding motion is performed between the first and second flat surfaces until the first and second optical axes are sufficiently collinear.

The hole is formed in the first and second cladding layers and outside an optical waveguide formation region. The lens component is optically coupled to the optical path conversion mirror. The lens component includes a lens main body, a bump, and protrusion portions. The lens main body has a lens function. The bump is fixed to a structure including the wiring board and the optical waveguide, in the hole by a joining material. A diameter of a tip end of the bump of the lens component is smaller than a minimum diameter of the hole.

摘要： An apparatus for positioning an optical device includes (i) a holder assembly for holding an optical device and for limiting movement of the optical device within the holder assembly to movement in the Z-direction and (ii) a housing for permitting limited movement of the holder assembly in the X-direction, for supporting and optionally permitting movement of the holder assembly in the Y-direction, for supporting and for substantially preventing movement of the holder assembly in the Z-direction. When the holder assembly optionally holding the optical device is positioned within the housing to obtain a desired position of the optical device, a bonding material may be used for fixing the location in the X-direction, and optionally the Y-direction, of the holder assembly within the housing. A method of operating the apparatus for obtaining a desired position of an optical device is further provided.
