    • A method performed by a weapon, includes interacting with a user of the weapon to receive a first code; determining whether the first code is consistent with a second code in a memory of the weapon to produce a result of determining; testing whether the weapon is in a zone; performing an operation of the weapon in accordance with the result and the weapon being in the zone. Interacting may include monitoring a switch that is operated by the user; and receiving may include determining the first code in accordance with a time between successive operations of the switch. The method may further include disabling performance of the operation in accordance with the weapon being not in the zone. And, after disabling, requiring a repeat performance of interacting and determining whether the first code is consistent with the second code before enabling performing a further operation of the weapon. An assembly for upgrading an electronic control device, the assembly includes an enclosure, an electrical connector, a battery, and a transceiver. The transceiver supplies to the electronic control device a current that conveys a result of testing whether the assembly is in a zone. A device detects that an electronic control device has been used. The device includes a radio receiver and a circuit. The electronic control device generates a radio signal when used. The circuit detects a plurality of properties of the received radio signal and outputs a signal in response to detecting.

    • A method for immobilization of a human or animal target passes a current through a circuit that includes tissue of the target. The current causes pain compliance or interferes with skeletal muscle control by the target. The method includes in any practical order: (a) generating a first compliance signal of the current, the first compliance signal having a first maximum amplitude; and (b) generating a second compliance signal of the current, the second compliance signal having a second maximum amplitude. The absolute value of the second maximum amplitude is less than the absolute value of the first maximum amplitude. A system that performs such a method may include a processor, a signal generator, and electrodes or terminals for forming the circuit through tissue of the target. Systems, according to various aspects of the present invention, may include stun guns, dart weapons, electronic control devices, electrified projectiles, and mines, to name a few applications.

    • An authorization system for a firearm (10) includes an authorizing device (32) worn by the authorized user, and a firearm (10) with a fire control system, a computer controller (28), and a piezo-electric disabler (60). The computer controller (28) communicates with the authorizing device (32), and if no authorizing signal is received from the authorizing device, sends an electric output signal to the disabler (60) to prevent the fire control system from allowing the firearm to fire. The disabler, upon application of the electrical signal from the computer controller, cams the rearward moving trigger bar (52) of the fire control system clear of the hammer line (54) to disrupt the fire control system. Consequently, the firearm (10) will not fire.

    • A hand tool, like a handgun, is provided having a wireless, push to talk switch embedded therein. When the push to talk switch is actuated, a signal is sent to an external, nearby two-way communication device. The signal is capable of actuating the microphone of the two-way communication device and causing transmission. In so doing, a user may use the communication device while keeping two hands on the tool. For example, when a police officer has two hands on a firearm, the police officer may press the push to talk button on the firearm, thereby allowing him to call for assistance with a radio or mobile telephone without having to take his hands off the firearm.
