    • A turbine, adaptable to enhance the levels of dissolved gas such as oxygen in water flowing therethrough, includes a rotating shaft and a runner secured to the shaft. The runner includes a crown, a band and a plurality of runner blades. Each blade is defined by an inner edge and a distal outer edge, a leading edge and a trailing edge separated by a water directing surface. At least one blade includes an integrally formed gas passage in fluid communication with a gas admission aperture in the crown. The gas passage may extend to the trailing edge. Alternatively, the gas passage may extend to the band, and the band then includes a gas discharge means. A method for making a blade having an integral gas passage includes securing a member with a first groove to an insert with a cooperating second grove. A turbine having a hub and a plurality of rotatable blades includes a plurality of groups of gas passages extending to at least one exterior region of the hub associated with a blade. The blade includes a gas admission passage extending to an edge region of the blade. A flexible boot is provided on the blade to fluidly couple the blade with at least one selected gas passage depending on the pitch of the blade. A control system may monitor sensors and regulate the dissolved oxygen level in the water.

    • An open flume installation for a hydraulic turbine is disclosed having an open flume defined by a floor, a pair of side walls and a back wall of a foundation structure. A water passageway is formed through the foundation with an outlet submerged within the tailwater and with an inlet formed through the floor of the flume adjacent the back wall. The inlet is provided with its axis inclined at a 45.degree. angle. A turbine runner is provided within the inlet for rotation about the axis. A generator is supported above the flume on a support structure spanning the side walls. An inclined shaft connects the runner and generator. The shaft and runner are supported for rotation by a conical vaned intake having its narrow portion surrounding the inlet and having its face portion extending between the side walls. A plurality of stay vanes project radially inwardly from the inner surface of the conical intake to a bearing housing which supports the shaft. The water passageway on the downstream side of the runner is a draft tube having a conical section on a downstream side of the runner connected to an elbow section which has a downstream end having a horizontal axis. A vortex suppressor is provided disposed within an upstream portion of the flume. The vortex suppressor comprises a plurality of plate members spaced parallel to one another and to the side walls of the flume. The plate members extend into a level of water within the flume and encourage laminar flow of water through the flume to the turbine intake.

    • A turbine rotor disassembly, handling and reassembly apparatus employs a feedback-controlled electric heating oven to rapidly heat a turbine wheel while the rotor shaft is in the horizontal position. An adapter interfaces the wheel to a handling spool whose outboard end is adjusted to slide on the rotor shaft and to provide a fulcrum for supporting the wheel. A handling trolley includes a soft hydraulic system for supporting the weight of the wheel to avoid damaging the precision machined surfaces of the shrink-fit area while the wheel is being withdrawn. The handling apparatus also provides means for upending. or rotating, the removed wheel through 90 degrees to place its axis vertical for facilitating handling. A sensor system senses a radial motion of the wheel to detect clearance and to establish an appropriate fluid pressure to just balance the weight of the wheel and attached parts. The handling system includes means for rotating the wheel slightly during reassembly to align keyways or the like. A technique is included for equalizing shaft heating during reassembly of a turbine rotor by cyclically elevating and lowering the wheel, by orbiting the wheel about the shaft or by holding the wheel in the center of its clearance about the shaft until a shrink fit is established.
