    • A multi-stage process, and apparatus for carrying out the process, are provided for refining lignocellulose containing material at high consistency. The lignocellulose material is pretreated to form a mixture of the lignocellulose material and pressurized steam conveyed via the pressure of the pressurized steam to a first refiner, wherein the lignocellulose material is conveyed mechanically into a first refining zone within the first refiner while causing the pressurized steam in the mixture to pass in reverse direction to the lignocellulose to a steam venting outlet to vent the steam from the first refiner. The lignocellulose material fed into the first refining zone is subjected to refining action thereby producing a mixture of partially refined lignocellulose material and pressurized steam developed during the refining action. This mixture of partially refined lignocellulose material and pressurized steam is conveyed via the pressure of the pressurized steam to a second refiner, wherein the partially refined lignocellulose material in the mixture is conveyed mechanically into a second refining zone in said second refiner while causing the pressurized steam in said mixture to pass in reverse direction to the lignocellulose material to a steam venting outlet to vent the steam from the second refiner. The lignocellulose material fed into the second refining zone is subjected to refining action thereby producing a mixture of further refined lignocellulose material and steam developed during said refining action. The further refined lignocellulose material is discharged from the second refiner and separated from the steam developed during the refining action.

    • A paper stock refiner provides low intensity treatment of pulp fiber to increase the strength characteristics of the pulp while reducing the specific energy required through increasing the number of refining surfaces. The number of refining surfaces is accomplished by providing a plurality of rotatable (30) and non-rotatable (36) refiner disks which are axially movable within a refiner, the rotatable disks being mounted on a torque transmitting section (28) of a shaft (26) and the non-rotatable disks being mounted against rotation on a plurality of supporting elements (44). In order to control the number of refiner bar crossings, the housing (12) may be opened and a desired number of refiner disks, both rotating and non-rotating, may be loaded into the refining chamber (16) on the shaft and the support elements, respectively.

    • A multiple disk refiner which includes a housing and a rotor hub mounted for rotation within the housing. A plurality of spaced refiner rotor disks are interleaved with spaced refiner stator disks, the pairs of disks being coaxial with the hub. The confronting faces of the stator disks and rotor disks have ribbed surfaces formed thereon for abrading and fibrillating a stock suspension as it passes in the spaces between the rotor and stator disks. The improvements of the present invention largely reside in a specific drive means for interconnecting the rotor and the rotor disks, the drive means including rigid links each of which has one end pivotally secured to the rotor and the other end pivotally secured to one of the rotor disks. A similar arrangement is provided utilizing rigid links for supporting the stator disks in proper position between the rotor disks while still providing some axial movement capability.

    • A refiner comprising a housing having a refining chamber providing a flow path for particulate material to be refined while travelling between an upstream inlet and a downstream outlet. A refining assembly in the chamber has a series of relatively rotatably cooperative axially confronting annular refining surfaces located on partially internested refining disks and defining radially extending refining zones therebetween and with radially opposite ends of the zones closed.     • A beater for refining fibre slurries, such as paper pulp, and for refining lump goods, such as wood chips and shavings comprises a central rotor and two outer fixed parts surrounding the rotor. The rotor is provided with two ring-shaped beater means and each of the two outer parts is provided with a ring-shaped beater means to form two beater zones between the beater means, one zone on each side of the rotor, in which zones the goods to be refined are treated during passage thereof substantially radially outwardly and as a result of the relative rotation between the rotor and the outer parts. The rotor has a cavity with an axial inlet for the goods to be refined and radially converging, substantially V-shaped defining walls, in which walls holes are arranged through which the goods can be passed to respective zones via passages formed between the rotor and the surrounding parts. A rotatable propeller-like means is arranged in the cavity to disintegrate the goods and to spread it by centrifugal force and to cause it to divide into two substantially equal flows which pass out through the holes in respective walls and into passages connecting therewith.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

    • A unique system and process for producing an improved refiner groundwood from a great variety of raw fibrous material including both softwoods, hardwoods and their waste residuals, characterized by a multi-stage disc refining of the raw materials. The first stage refining is effected in a pressurized environment and features an absence of liquid except for that moisture embodied in the raw material per se in delivery to the refiner. The first stage refining is conducted under controlled conditions providing a moderate elevated pressure and subsequent disc refining is effected under atmospheric pressure conditions. The unique result is a bright fiber yield equal to that available in straight atmospheric refining. More importantly, the yield is achieved with a minimum of power. A most significant result of the invention process is an unexpected reduction in bulk of the fiber furnished.
