    • A solid state sewing machine drive system includes a brushless direct current motor, the speed of which is set and maintained by controlling the width of the field energization pulses. The motor is accelerated and maintained at a selected speed while operating in a closed loop mode, decelerated quickly to a stop by means of a dynamic brake, driven in an open loop stepping mode to a selected angular position, and then magnetically held in that position. Alternatively the motor may be decelerated to a predetermined low speed near stop by a dynamic brake and then driven in an open loop stepping mode to a predetermined angular position where it is held magnetically in that position. The motor includes fixed sensing inductors which sense the proximity of metallic segments rotating with the permanent magnet motor rotor for providing motor commutation signals and signals representing one possible stopping position of the rotor, and other sensing inductors which may be rotated relative to the motor field windings for providing signals representing another, angular positionable stopping position of the rotor. The circuit for supplying energization pulses to the motor field when operated in the open loop mode is provided with information regarding actual rotor position while the motor is decelerated so that when the stepping mode is actually begun, the rotor will continue to rotate in the same direction and will be synchronized with the rotating magnetic field.

    • A sewing machine comprises a main drive shaft which is driven through a clutch mechanism which includes a clutch disc having a stopping groove. The groove is engageable by a locking member of an operating lever. A centrifugal braking mechanism includes a weighted brake member which is supported around the shaft on a spring which biases the brake member to engage a fixed abutment of the housing surrounding the shaft. The brake member is held during rotation of the shaft by a holding collar which engages an outward extension of the brake member under the force of a biasing coil spring. The operating lever is held by a locking lever which may be released under the action of a control cam to permit displacement of the locking member out of the locking groove after the speed of the main shaft drops below a certain value. When the shaft does return below a predetermined speed, the weights move inwardly toward the shaft and they engage with the holding collar which is returned to an engagement position by its associated spring after the locking lever is moved to a position permitting the operating lever to move out of engagement with the clutch disc stop groove.

    • A sewing machine having a rotary drive mechanism and a needle bar mounted for reciprocation between upper and lower positions with respect to a looper includes a transmission system operably connected between the rotary drive means and the needle bar to convert the rotary motion of the drive means to reciprocating motion of the needle bar. The transmission system includes a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and pivotally connected at one end to the needle bar, a crank pivotally connected at one end to the rotary drive means, and a pitman pivotally connected between the crank and the other end of the lever to convert the rotary motion of the drive means and crank to reciprocating motion for oscillating the lever and reciprocating the needle bar. The crank is operatively connected to the looper for synchronously driving the looper with the needle bar. The transmission system also includes means for selectively maintaining the line of thrust of the pitman in a first position substantially perpendicular to the lever to transmit motion thereto from the drive means for reciprocating the needle bar and in a second position substantially in alignment with the lever whereby the pitman idles under the influence of the drive means without transmitting motion to the lever or the needle bar.
