Pyridoxal-5 1 -phosphate is obtained by oxidation of pyridoxine-5 1 -phosphate or pyridoxamine-51-phosphate with enzymes of certain micro-organisms in the presence of 1 to 20 mol parts of an α-amino acid which can form a Schiff's base with pyridoxal-5 1 -phosphate, or a salt of such an α-amino acid, and 0À5 to 4 mol parts of a salt of zinc, nickel, magnesium, iron, copper, aluminium, vanadium, mercury or arsenic, per mol part of the starting phosphate. In examples pyridoxine-5 1 -phosphate is reacted with extracts obtained from cells produced by growing Alcaligenes faecalis in aqueous media, the reactions being carried out in the presence of lysine monohydrochloride, sodium glutamate, zinc sulphate, magnesium chloride and nickel chloride.

One process may include the steps of providing a plurality of areca fruits, drying the plurality of areca fruits, dehusking the plurality of areca fruits to obtain a plurality of areca nuts, chopping, shredding or grinding the plurality of areca nuts into a multiplicity of areca nut particles, introducing the multiplicity of areca nut particles into a tank containing water, agitating the multiplicity of areca nut particles to create a slurry, determining an amount of arecoline in the slurry and pumping the water having the predetermined amount of arecoline through a filter and into a holding tank and evaporating the arecoline from the water. Additional steps include fermentation, distillation, pasteurization, and cold pressing of the arecoline to produce a synthetic nicotine and/or botanical pesticide.
