    • A method and apparatus for manufacturing tagged two-ply infusion packages. The string (14) forming the tags is supplied to a rotating drum (12) which has a plurality of pins (17) protruding from its periphery. The drum (12) is rotatably mounted so as to cooperate with a web (1) used to form at least one layer of the two-ply infusion package. As the drum (12) rotates the string (14) is guided around the pins (17). The web (1) is introduced to the drum (12) by a roller (29) and urged against it by a curved guide (30) to transfer the string from the periphery of the drum to the surface of the web (1). The guide (30) is heated so as to melt the thermoplastics coating on the web (1), whereby the string is attached lightly to the web by the combination of heat and pressure from the guide (30). The web (1) with the string (14) lightly attached thereto is then sealed to a second web on which an infusion material has been deposited by heat sealing rollers (8) to form a travelling two-ply web having infusion containing pockets (11). The individual packages are then cut from the travelling two-ply web by, for example, co-rotating cutting rollers defining the shape of the packages.

    • An infusible package includes a closed bag, containing an infusible substance for infusion in a liquid. The bag is formed from panels of porous material sealed at their peripheral margins; and at least one string. Each string extends through a seal between the panels, enters the interior of the bag at a point on the peripheral margins and extends across the interior of the bag to an anchoring point at or adjacent the peripheral margins. The length of that portion of each string which extends across the interior of the bag between the point on the peripheral margins and the anchoring point is greater than the distance between that point and the anchoring point. With this arrangement, pulling the string initially causes withdrawal from the bag interior of slack string length disposed therein.

    • An infuser (1) comprising an elongated member (2) having at one end (4), a gripping portion (64) and, at the other end (3), a perforated or porous wall portion (5) forming the infuser charge holding chamber. A sleeve (9) slides along the elongated member (2) to cover or expose the perforations (8) or the porous material (40). To use the infuser (1), the infuser (1) is gripped by the gripping portion (64) and the sleeve (9) slid towards the gripping end (64), exposing the hygienically covered perforations (8) or porous material (40), which is stirred into boiling water to extract the required flavour or substances from the infuser charge. Upon completion the infuser is removed above the water and the sleeve (9) is slid down sealing the perforations (8) or porous material to lessen leakage from the infuser (1).

    • A package for containing a flowable infusible material comprising a closed bag made from a porous material. The bag has a first side, a second side that opposes the first side and two other sides. The package also has a drawstring that passes out of the interior of the package via a first exit point located adjacent one end of the first side and a second exit point located adjacent the other end of the first side. Means are provided to constrain the drawstring against adjacent the ends of the second side and at some intermediate point along each of said other sides (preferably near the midpoint). The arrangement being such that pulling the ends of the drawstring in substantially opposite directions causes the drawstring to move relative to the sides it engages and thus enable the package to collapse.

    • Ground coffee is packaged in a disposable brewing device for use in brewing a mug of coffee in a novel and unique manner facilitated by the use of a microwave oven. To prepare a freshly brewed mug of coffee the disposable device is inserted into and attached unto a coffee mug, water is added and the mug is placed in a microwave oven. A resilient stable element supports and anchors a filter bag containing premeasured amount of ground coffee beans. Expandable inner volume of filter bag facilitates percolation, minimizes buoyant force and prevents spill-over. Materials with varied coefficients of absorption to microwave energy are utilized in construction so that desired temperature differences are realized.

    • A coffee brewing device includes a housing for holding ground coffee with at least one wall of the housing being formed from a permeable filtering membrane which permits a flow-through of water. The interior of the housing is vented to the atmosphere through an attached conduit, which can be used as a handle, so as to permit the escape of gases which are generated when the coffee grounds are submerged in a cup of hot water. Baffles which serve to control the extent and direction of gas movement may be positioned in the housing. By such control, the generated gases may be utilized to agitate the coffee grounds to thus get a more complete mixing of the grounds with the water prior to a venting of the gases to the atmosphere. The baffles may be of both a perforated and non-perforated design so as to control gas bubble size and direction of flow.

    • An improved beverage infusion device and a method of rapid brewing an infusible beverage substance such as fresh, fine ground, roasted coffee by air agitation in an air-water chamber. The wall of the chamber is constructed of a fine porous filtering material that confines particles of coffee during agitation thereof with water of an amount necessary for brewing either one or more serving portions of coffee. An air conduit directs air underneath the coffee particles accumulated in the air-water chamber that is immersed in hot water. The hot water enters the porous wall of the air-water chamber, saturating the coffee particles. One or more intermittent burst of air are directed by the conduit under the coffee particles thereby momentarily suspending the coffee particles in the water, and agitating the coffee particles and the water. The water solubles of the coffee are extracted rapidly and mixed with the water to create a beverage.
