    • A portable gun-type adhesive discharger operable independent of an external power source. The adhesive discharger includes a main case body for supporting a rigid adhesive stick extending in a longitudinal direction, a hand grip portion for manually holding the main case body, a heating unit disposed in the main case body for melting the adhesive stick, a nozzle portion connected to a front end of the main case body for discharging melted adhesive stick, and a trigger portion disposed at the hand grip portion and connected to the adhesive stick for feeding the adhesive stick toward the nozzle portion. The main case body and the hand grip portion provide an interior space in combination. A gas supply unit having a gas reservoir is provided in the interior space, and catalytically combustible gas is filled in the reservoir. The heating unit includes a catalytic combustion unit disposed in the interior at a position adjacent the adhesive stick. An ignition unit is provided in the interior for igniting the combustible substance fed to the catalytic combustion unit from the gas supply unit.

    • A unitary arrangement for quickly and effectively coating ski runners and similar planar surfaces with a heat-plasticizable, wax-type coating substance is described. An elongated container for the plasticizable substance is resiliently and telescopically arranged within an upwardly projecting hollow flange portion of a coating-application member, and a burner nozzle is removably secured to the container and is arranged to direct a flame either against the container wall or the wall of the application member, both of which are formed from a heat-conductive material such as brass. A downward manual pressure on the container serves to open a normally closed valve between the container and the member to complete a communication path between the interior of the container and a coating slot on the bottom of the application member, while the simultaneous activation of the nozzle will plasticize the coating composition in the container via heat conduction. Upon a longitudinal movement of the overall assembly on the surface to be coated, the now-plasticized coating composition is uniformly applied to such surface through the coating slot on the bottom of the application member.

    • In a dispenser or applicator of heat softenable material, a melt body has a generally conical melting chamber extending between an inlet and a relatively smaller outlet passage, at least one by-pass interconnected to the melting chamber by a plurality of spaced, radial bores arranged to conduct hot melt from successive outer "layers" of the material as it is being progressively softened, reduced and liquefied in the chamber for flowing to the outlet, and at least one axial auxiliary channel extending between the outlet and the smaller end of the melting chamber for conducting the central core of the last-to-be melted end portion of the material. Preferably the body has a pair of by-passes, a pair of auxiliary channels, encloses a heater, and is of configuration facilitating its economical construction in one piece.The method aspect features casting or otherwise providing a one-piece melt body of a metal, such as an aluminum alloy, to provide a main conical melt chamber and a cavity for a heater, boring one or more by-passes in the casting from its outlet and toward its inlet end and substantially parallel and adjacent to at least a portion of the outer wall of the melt chamber, boring an axial auxiliary channel to interconnect the outlet to the smaller end of the melt chamber, drilling the casting radially to provide substantially aligned holes interconnecting a by-pass with the melt chamber, inserting an element for instance a plug or ball as by press-fitting in an outer end of each hole, and sealing the outer ends of said holes, preferably simultaneously, by swedging external metal of the casting in overlapping retentive relation to the exterior portions of the elements.

    • Apparatus for melting and dispensing heat softenable thermoplastic material such as adhesives, including a main body portion having therein a melting chamber, an inlet passageway leading into one end of the chamber, and a discharge passageway in communication with said chamber and at the other end thereof. The melt chamber has a cross section which progressively diminishes from the inlet end toward the discharge end. The main body portion includes a collecting manifold disposed generally parallel to the melting chamber and opening into the discharge passageway, at the discharge end of the main body portion. A plurality of by-pass conduits disposed in the main body portion and operably connected between the melting chamber and manifold permit the melted thermoplastic material to exit from the melt chamber as it becomes liquefied by passing through the by-pass conduit means and further traversing the collecting manifold to be delivered to the discharge passageway at the discharge end of the melting chamber.
